Soc Day 29 - Ethnicity & Assimilation

Objective:  Examine race and ethnicity in a sociological construct.

Task:  Good morning!  Once again, we'll begin class with an audio clip.   Then, we'll continue your notes on with an examination of ethnicity and assimilation.  Before continuing on with our group project, you'll take the Race Implicit Association Test.  Finally, we'll spend the last portion of class working on the next step of your project.
  1. Find your partner to compare and discuss your notes on your assigned minority group.  
  2. As a group, find at least two news stories and at least two portrayals of your minority group in the popular media (ex. television, film, literature, etc.) 
  3. Analyze the stories and minority portrayals from a sociological perspective
Homework:
  • TODAY - Race vocabulary due
  • Wednesday, March 12 - "When Did Jews Become White Folks" discussion (come prepared with at least 3 discussion questions and five comments on the article)
  • Monday, March 24 - Reflective essay due
  • Thursday, March 13 - Presentations - Minority Groups in US
