HWC Day 79 - European Incursion in Latin America

Objective:  Compare and contrast Spanish & indigenous accounts of the conquest of Latin America.  Investigate the social structure of colonial Latin America.

Task: Good afternoon!  When you arrive to class, please open up your analysis of "Accounts of Spanish Conquest."  We're going to create a Venn diagram to analyze these very different accounts and try to figure out why these stories seem to be at odds.  Then, we'll examine some artwork to investigate colonial social structure in Latin America.

Task:  We'll continue our examination of the relationship between race, class, gender, and education with a short activity on the achievement gap in the United States.  Specifically, we'll consider which indicators are used to identify achievement gaps and find and discuss reports of disparities in education.

HWC Day 78 - Indigenous Peoples of Latin America

Objective:   Investigate the geography of Latin America.  Discuss the influence and characteristics of indigenous peoples of Latin America.

Task: When you arrive to class, please find a seat in the discussion circle with others who read the same article on indigenous peoples.  Each group will create a poster describing identifying characteristics and unique qualities of the peoples.  Then, you'll present your poster to the class and we'll compare and contrast these civilizations.  We'll also use this information to characterize Latin America prior to the Columbian Exchange.   Finally, we'll end class with a game to review the physical geography of Latin America.
