HWC Day 42 - Europe Wrap-Up

Objective:  Investigate the unique aspects of Basque culture.  Examine the history of the Balkans.  Discuss and analyze the complex history of the Crimean Peninsula.   

Task:  Today, we'll finish our studies of Europe with an examination of the Basque culture, the tumultuous history of the Balkans, and the Crimean.  First,  we'll spend a few minutes exploring the Basque culture.  Then, you'll explore the Balkans and the complex geo-political history of the region.  Next, you'll read an article and analyze a map of the Crimean peninsula. Using the article and map, you'll work with a partner to answer some questions.  If there is any time remaining, we'll review for the mid-term exam.

Soc Day 1 - Welcome!

Objective:  Establish an understanding of class rules and begin to examine how society influences our lives.

Task:  Welcome to sociology class!  I'm sorry I could not be here personally, but I have left you in very competent hands!  Today you'll begin with the usual first day of class activities including attendance, seating assignments, and a review of class rules and expectations. We'll also spend some time with an introduction to some of the class resources such as the textbook and the class Moodle.  Then, you'll use the remainder of class to work on your unit 1 vocabulary and begin reading "What is Sociology?"

Objective:  Investigate culture and contemporary issues facing the Roma in Europe.  Examine the 

Task:  You will be reading an article about the Crimean peninsula and the tense history of Ukraine and Russia. Next, you'll use a map and the article to answer seven questions with a partner. During the second half of class you'll work independently on a crossword puzzle to review major concepts and vocabulary for the midterm. You may use your notes, handouts, textbook, and readings to complete the crossword review.

Soc Day 42 - Presentations & Wrap-Up

Objective:  Present and evaluate children's books.

Task:  Happy Friday! At the beginning of class, I'll collect any last textbooks and your reflection papers.  Then, we'll spend the first portion of class presenting and discussing your children's books. Finally, we'll wrap-up sociology with a game of "Sociopoly."

As we conclude our studies together, I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for a wonderful quarter.  Although we lost significant class time due to the weather, you willingly adapted to the constantly changing deadlines.  It was truly a joy to explore sociology with you this quarter!

CPWC Day 42 - European Union & the Basques

Objectives: Investigate the formation of and contemporary issues faced by the European Union. Examine Basque culture and the history of the Basque separatist movement in France and Spain. 

Task: You will be using your textbook to read the case study on the European Union on pages 326-329. As you read you will work on the in-depth reading guide to complete the questions. You will then get into groups to check your work. You will read primary sources A, B, C, D,& E and answer the questions posted on the board. Next, we will watch a short video clip introducing the culture of the Basque people, after which you will get out the computers to do an activity researching the history and conflicts of the Basques in France and Spain.

HWC Day 41 - Industrial Revolution

Objective: Identify the factors that contributed to the start of the industrial revolution in Great Britain.  Examine the social implication that resulted form the Industrial Revolution.  

Task: You will be looking at two different articles that explain the social, economic, political and geographic features of Great Britain that facilitated the rise of the Industrial revolution in the 1750s.  As you read you will be completing a graphic organizer and then identifying some of the technological advancements and social changes of the 18th and 19th centuries. Then, we'll look at an excerpt from the Communist Manifesto as a reaction to the changes of industrialization. With any remaining time you can work on your Flat Connections Project or your regional study.

Objective:  Explore the role of various institutions in socialization.

Task:  To begin, you'll read "The Three Little Pigs: Pleasure Principle vs. Reality Principle."  After you've finished reading you'll watch Disney's "The Three Little Pigs."  We'll spend a few minutes discussing the two versions of the story before you take a comprehension quiz.  Finally, you'll use the remainder of class to work with your partner on your children's book.

CPWC Day 41 - Industrial Revolution

Objective:  Identify the factors that contributed to the start of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain.  Determine the social implications of the Industrial Revolution and identify new technologies.

Task: You will each be receiving a graphic organizer on the geographic, economic, and political features of Great Britain that ushered in the Industrial Revolution during the 1750s. You will have two articles to read and reference in identifying these contributing circumstances and recording them on your sheet. As you read, you will also ascertain the social changes and technological advances that resulted from the Industrial Revolution.  Finally, you'll answer the reading comprehension questions. Once you've completed the Industrial Revolution activity, please use the remainder of class time to work on your assignment due today at 3.

HWC Day 40 - Absolutism & Revolution

Objective: Identify and examine the main events of the French Revolution. Define enlightenment ideals that influenced the Revolution by examining a primary source document. 

Task: We will begin class by discussing and reviewing the Divine Right of Kings activity from yesterday. Next, we'll watch a video about and take notes on the French Revolution.  After the video, we'll review your notes to ensure comprehension. Lastly, we will read and look at the document "Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizenry" and identify Enlightenment ideas implemented in the early stages of the French Revolution.

CPWC Day 40 - Absolutism & Revolution

Objective:  Examine and identify the main events of the French Revolution.  Make connections between enlightenment ideals and the Revolution.  Define the role of divine right of Kings and Absolute power.

Task: To begin class, we'll examine Divine Right of Kings as a document of the age of Absolutism. Then, you'll complete a DBQ on "Absolutism and Democracy." HWC Day 39 - Map Quiz, Columbian Exchange, & Absolutism

Objective: Assess knowledge of European geographic features, countries and capitals. Identify the motivations of European explorers in the Columbian Exchange.  Assess the impact of the Columbian Exchange on the Americas and Europe. 

Task: Today, we'll begin class with your Europe map quiz. Please clear your desks and spread out to different seats. When you're finished with the quiz, you'll examine on the primary source document Divine Right of Kings and answering the corresponding questions. Next, we'll consider the motivations of European monarchs in the 15th and 16th centuries and the Columbian Exchange. We will watch two short video clips:



Lastly, we will use a map and other resources to understand the positive and negative consequences of the Columbian exchange.

Objective: Asses knowledge of European geography.  Describe the Columbian Exchange and its impact on the American continents and Europe.  Explain the themes of continuity and change in early modern Europe.

When you've finished, please hand in the quiz and take out the activity you completed for the Renaissance. You will now be working on Station #4 the Columbian Exchange. HWC Day 38 - Scientific Revolution & Enlightenment

Objective:  Identify key people in the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment. Make connections and discuss the influence of the Renaissance, Reformation and common themes of Humanism and Secularism in all three movements. Compare and contrast the philosophies of John Locke and Thomas Hobbes.

Task: Happy Monday!  We'll begin today's class with a review of the absolutism and Enlightenment packet that are due today identifying themes and main ideas. Then, you'll further explore five significant thinkers of the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment by referencing a PowerPoint presentation on the Moodle, your absolutism and enlightenment packet, and additional resources to answer the questions on each thinker.  Next, we'll examine two primary source documents from Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan and John Locke's Of Civil Government. We will compare and contrast the two philosophers and discuss their differing perspectives.

You will have a video guide to scaffold your note taking and to ensure comprehension of the video. I will also pause the video at certain parts to address the main ideas of the video. HWC Day 36 - Renaissance Ideals & the Printing Press

Objective: Assess understanding of the article, "Dawn of the Renaissance."  Define humanism, secularism, materialism, individualism, and classicism in relation to the Renaissance.  Interpret the significance of the printing press in the communication of new ideas during the Era.

Task:  When you arrive to class, please clear your desks and spread out around the room in preparation for your quiz.  You'll spend the first portion of class taking your reading comprehension quiz on "Dawn of the Renaissance."  When you've completed the quiz you will pick up a dictionary and define the terms: secularism, humanism, individualism, materialism, and classicism. Then, you'll split into two separate groups. One group will identify these traits in Renaissance art work while another group completes a worksheet discussing the significance of the moveable-type press. We will reconvene to watch a short clip on the printing press.  Finally, you'll use the remainder of class-time working on the Flat Connections Global Project.

CPWC Day 36 - Exploring the Renaissance

Objective: Define humanism, secularism, materialism, and classicism in relation to the Renaissance. Interpret the significance of the printing press during the Early Modern era. 

Task: We'll begin class by labeling Northern Europe on our map. Then, we'll review "Why the Renaissance, Why Florence."  Next, I'll provide you with some notes to set the stage for our exploration of the Renaissance.  For the majority of the class, you'll delve into aspects of the Renaissance.  One group will identify the ideas of humanism, secularism, materialism, and individualism in Renaissance art with a comparison to medieval art. A second group will read about the impact and significance of the printing press. We will reconvene to finish class with a short clip about the printing press and then complete a chart on the differences between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

HWC Day 35 - Renaissance in Europe

Objective:  Identify the key characteristics of the Renaissance.  Examine the socio-economic and political climate that facilitated the development of the Renaissance in Italy. List names, dates, events and places that are relevant to the early years of the Renaissance. 

Task: We'll begin class by reviewing the Heritage of Europe activity from yesterday. Next, we'll watch a short clip describing the fall of the Roman Empire.  Then, we'll watch a segment of the documentary Money and Power. While watching the video, you'll take notes on important ideas. Then, we'll compare and contrast the philosophical, economic, religious and governmental differences between the medieval period and the Renaissance.  Finally, with the remainder of class you can work on your summary paragraph on Money and Power

HWC Day 34 - Defining Europe

Objective: Identify and label countries, cities, bodies of water, and major geographic features of Europe. Examine how Europe's chronology contributed to the development of different cultures and political evolution throughout history. 

Task: We will begin class discussing the reading you did for homework, "Prelude to the Modern World." Next, we'll take some notes on the character, shared heritage, and geographic features of Europe. CPWC Day 34 - Mapping Europe

Objective: Identify and label countries, cities, bodies of water, and major geographic features of Europe. Examine how Europe's chronology contributed to the development of different cultures and political evolution throughout history. 

Task: We will begin class by labeling and coloring our map of Western Europe. Once we've finished with the map, we'll spend a few minutes taking notes on the Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian heritage of Europe, the influence of geography on culture in the region, and how political borders of Europe have influenced cultural exchanges. You will look further into this idea in your Heritage of Europe discovery activity.

Soc Day 33 - Stereotypes, Hate Crimes, & Theories of Prejudice

Objective:  Examine race and ethnicity in a sociological construct.

Task:  To begin class, we'll finish our notes on stereotypes, prejudice, hate crimes, and the theoretical perspectives of prejudice.  To illustrate the issues addressed in these notes, we'll consider some biographies and stereotypes in the popular media.  We'll also explore an image associated with hate crimes.  If there is any time remaining in class, you'll work on the study guide for tomorrow's quiz, "Investigating Genocide," or your reflective essay.

There will be four stations: the Arab-Israeli Conflict, Abrahamic Religions, culture and geography, and, lastly, nationalist movements.

HWC Day 31 - Arab-Israeli Conflict

Objective: Sort out key events and current issues relating to the Arab-Israeli Conflict and the Israel-Palestine conflict. Examine and discuss the veiling of women in the middle east. Examine and discuss the veiling of women in the middle east.

Task: Today we will examine the Arab-Israeli conflict in greater detail. You will receive a timeline chart for which there are 11 dates. In pairs or groups of three, you will log on to the BBC News "History of Conflict" link. You will research the date that you are assigned to identify the event that is associated with your date.  Then, take notes on the event focusing specifically on how this fits into the history of the Arab/Israeli conflict. Write out your notes on the provided board.  After all posters are completed, you will rotate around the room visiting each poster and recording the notes to fill in and complete the timeline chart.  Finally, we will review the timeline as a class. At the end of class we will read and discuss From Tunis to Tehran. The reading questions for this article are due tomorrow on a separate sheet of paper.
