CPWC Day 21 - Nationalism, Independence, and Apartheid

Objective:  Explore the emergence of nationalism in Sub-Saharan Africa.  Evaluate paths to independence in Sub-Saharan Africa.  Describe the implementation and collapse of apartheid in South Africa.

Task:  Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please download "Resistance, Nationalism, and Independence."  As a class, we'll work through the packet.  Then, we'll explore the apartheid in South Africa.  Finally, if there is any time remaining, we'll begin exploring some contemporary issues in Sub-Saharan Africa.

HWC Day 21 - Nationalism & Independence in Sub-Saharan Africa

Objectives:  Identify and dispel misconceptions about Africa.  Explore the emergence of nationalism and independence in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Task:  Good morning!   When you arrive to class, please form a horseshoe in preparation for our discussion circle.  We'll spend the first half of class finishing our discussion on the Crowder article and review the emergence of nationalism in Sub-Saharan Africa.  Then, we'll spit into groups to examine Boko Haram in Nigeria, al-Shabab in Somalia, the civil war in DRC, dictatorial rule in Zimbabwe, and genocide in Rwanda and Burundi.

CPWC Day 20 - Imperialism & Resistance

Objective:  Label countries, cities, and bodies of water of Sub-Saharan Africa.   

Task:  Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please get out "Scramble for Africa" in preparation for part II completion.  Find a partner and use the map to answer the questions in Part II and to color the attached map (see annotated image below).  Then, after you've completed the second portion of the "Scramble for Africa," begin working through "Resistance, Nationalism, and Independence."  Be sure to use close reading strategies - highlight important ideas, circle those concepts/ideas which are unclear, and make notes in the margins.  Finally, you'll spend the last portion of class watching "The Danger of a Single Story."

Task:  Good morning!   Today, we're going to focus on the injustices and subsequent  collapse of white minority rule in South Africa.  To begin class, you'll read the "Apartheid" summary linked below.  After a brief discussion, you'll watch "A Force More Powerful" segment on South Africa.  You'll also have time to complete Part C of the Regional Study.  Before leaving class, please make sure to post a reflection to the "AFMP - Apartheid in South Africa" discussion thread in Schoology.

CPWC Day 19 - Africa Map Quiz & Imperialism in Africa

Objective:  Label countries, cities, and bodies of water of Sub-Saharan Africa.   Investigate ancient and medieval history of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Task:  Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please clear your desk and get out a pen or pencil in preparation for your map quiz.  After you've finished the quiz, please turn the quiz in at the back of the room.  Then, get out your i-Pad and complete part I of "Scramble for Africa."  If you finish part I before everyone else has finished the quiz, work on your "Foundations Investigation" OR begin working on your study guide for the unit 2 test on Friday.  After everyone has finished the quiz, you'll work with a partner to complete part II of the "Scramble for Africa."  We'll review and discuss parts I & II before working through part III of "The Scramble for Africa" together.

You'll have the duration of the period to complete the exam.  If you need more time, you may come during period 12 TODAY to complete the short answer questions.  However, the objective portion of the exam must be completed in class.

CPWC Day 12 - Unit 1 Test

Objective:  Assess knowledge and understanding of unit 1 content.

Task:  When you arrive to class, please pick up the Africa map packet and the large Africa map from the side table.  Take a piece of tracing paper and tape one side to the large map.  Then, get out a pencil and clear your desk in preparation for the unit 1 test.  After I answer any final questions, I'll distribute your test and answer sheet.

    Objectives:   Consider "modern," "nation," and "race" as social constructs.  Identify justifications for and implications of imperialism in the 19th & 20th centuries.

    Task:  When you arrive to class, please get out your i-Pad and read about Benedict Anderson's "imagined communities" and "If You Shouldn't Call It The Third World, What Should You Call It?" (NPR, 1/4/15).  We'll take these ideas to examine social constructs.  Then, we'll divide into groups to explore imperialism.  Finally, you'll use the last portion of class to explore examples of globalization.

    SVHS MUN - Welcome!

    Welcome to SVHS Model United Nations!

    As a member of Model UN, you'll explore the many issues facing our global society.  You'll act as a representative of your chosen country, write resolutions, and debate in a United Nations simulation.  This year, we'll go to Lehigh to participate in a MUN simulations with other schools.

    Objective:   Explore the ways in which culture is perpetuated, changed, and spread.

    Objective:   Discuss the characteristics of culture.  Establish a basis for studying culture.

    Task:  Good morning!  I hope you all had wonderful holiday weekend.  When you arrive to class, please use your i-Pad to look up and record the definitions for the following terms:

    Objective:  Identify and label oceans, continents, and cultural regions on a world map.  Discuss the characteristics of culture.

    Task: Happy Thursday!  Its hard to believe that we've already arrived at the end of our first week.  When you arrive to class, please get out your reading notes.  We'll spend the first portion of class reviewing your reading homework.  Then, we'll finish labeling and coloring our cultural regions map.  Next, we'll head back to our regular seats to take some notes on culture.  Finally, we'll end class with a GoogleSearch to find images illustrating the impact of geography on culture.

    Objective:  Consider the concepts addressed in chapter 1, section 1 of the text.  Identify and label oceans, continents, and cultural regions on a world map.
