HWC Day 56 - From Mughal Rule to Partition

Objectives:  Evaluate the historical developments of South Asia.

Task:  Good afternoon!  When you arrive to class, please work with a partner to compare the religions of Islam and Hinduism.  After a brief discussion,  we'll continue our notes on the history of South Asia.  We'll also spend time analyzing Kipling's, "White Man's Burden."  Finally, we'll end class with a discussion on partition.

West Civ Day 17 - Renaissance Wrap-Up

Objectives:  Identify key characteristics of the Renaissance.  Compare and contrast the Italian Renaissance and the Northern Renaissance.

Task: When you arrive to class, please get out your "Humanism and Reformation" packet.  We'll split into teams to answer the questions.  After discussion, we'll compare and contrast the characteristics of the Italian Renaissance and the Northern Renaissance.   Finally, we'll examine select works of art to identify themes of the Renaissance.

CPWC Day 59 - Historical Developments in South Asia

Objective:  Examine the religious and philosophical traditions of South Asia.  Investigate select historical events to define the cultural heritage of South Asia.

Task:  As you arrive to class, please pick up the Buddhism packet on the front podium.  After you've completed the packet, we'll continue with our notes on Buddhism and review the packet.  Then, we'll finish our notes on the religions of South Asia.  Finally, we'll wrap up class with a timeline of significant events in the history of South Asia.

Objectives:  Explain how the role of the artist in society changed as the ideas of the Renaissance gained prominence.

Task: The artistic achievements of the Italian Renaissance are arguably the most visible and well-known aspects of the period.  Today, we'll watch a video and discuss (via live, moderated blog) the impact of art on Renaissance society.

CPWC Day 58 - Religions & History of South Asia

Objective:  Examine the religious and philosophical traditions of South Asia.  Investigate select historical events to define the cultural heritage of South Asia.

Task:  We'll begin class with your unit 6 reading quiz.  Please get out your reading notes and a pencil in preparation.  After you've finished the quiz, turn it in at the back of the room and pick up your unit 6 study guide.  Work on the study guide until everyone has finished the quiz.  Then, we'll break into groups to review central concepts of Hinduism and to interpret the image below.  Next, we'll finish our notes on the religions of South Asia.

West Civ Day 16 - Martin Luther Trial Simulation

Objectives:  Simulate the trial of Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms.

Task: Welcome!  As you arrive to class, please get into your costume and move to the appropriate side of the room for the trial.  Before beginning, we'll have the chief justice briefly summarize the socio-historical context of the trial and the role of religion in daily life in 1520s "Germany."  Then, the chief justice will read the charges and the trial will commence following the described format.  At the end of the trial, you'll complete a survey to provide feedback on the trial.

West Civ Day 15 - Humanism & the Reformation

Objectives:  Research the socio-historical context and individuals of the Protestant Reformation.

Task: Good morning!  Please use "Humanism & Reformation - ANSWERS" (available in your resources folder in GoogleDrive) to complete your "Humanism and Reformation" packet.  Do NOT print this out - you must WRITE the information in your packet.  Please make note of any questions that you have while your completing your notes.


After you've finished your packet, please continue preparations for our simulation of the trial of Martin Luther.  By the time you get to class, you should all have notes from me either in GoogleDocs or via email about your character development & position paper.  Don't forget - we have some very special guests as judges and observers coming to see our trial.  Make sure you prepare accordingly!

Objective:  Investigate the life and contributions of Mohandas Gandhi.  Examine the social and political impact of recent events in Nepal.

Task:  Good morning!  Today, we're going to explore the life and contributions of one of the most influential individuals of the 20th century.  Specifically, we'll consider the Mohandas Gandhi's as a nationalist and activist for peace.

For the second portion of class, you'll work with a partner to learn about recent events in Nepal.  With your partner, use one or more of the news sources below to answer the following questions:

  1. What natural disaster occurred in Nepal this weekend?
  2. How is this event impacting Nepal?
  3. What is the international community doing in response to this disaster?

Write BOTH of your names and answers on a piece of paper.  Be sure to hand in your responses before you leave class.

Objectives:  Research the socio-historical context and individuals of the Protestant Reformation.

Task:  Today, you'll have the entire class session to work on your trial preparation.  Work with your "team" to clarify your position and prepare your character role.    


  • Chief Justice:  You are a cardinal - an important position in the Catholic church - and must decide whether Martin Luther is guilty of the three counts BASED UPON the case presented. You must maintain order and decorum in the courtroom.  You will provide background and context prior to the trial and make a verdict at the end of the trial.
  • Attorneys:  Your job is to prosecute or defend Martin Luther on the three charges.  Work with your witnesses to build your case.  You will need to create an opening argument and a closing argument.
  • Defense Witnesses
    • Martin Luther - YOU are on trial!  You must be able to answer questions consistently with Luther's theological view.
    • Jan Hus - YOU are an early Christian reformer!  You must be able to answer questions consistently with Hus's theological view.
    • German prince - YOU may be Catholic or a reformer BUT you are testifying for the defense! You are frustrated by the decrees of Charles V and Pope Leo X and seeking greater political influence in your domain.
    • German commoner - YOU are most likely illiterate!  Consider how Luther's teachings may improve your life.

HWC Day 50 - Geography & Religions of South Asia

Objectives: Identify geographic characteristics of South Asia.  Examine the religious and philosophical traditions that shape the culture of South Asia.

Task:  Good afternoon!  We'll begin with the "Breaking Free" reading quiz.  When you've finished the quiz, please turn it in at the back of the room and pick up the South Asia geography investigation.  Use the information provided on the Moodle to answer the questions.  Finally, I'll introduce the religions presentation project.

West Civ Day 11 - Introduction to the Renaissance

Objectives:  Investigate the culture and people of the Renaissance.  Collaborate to create an audio-visual presentation on an Italian city-state.

Task:  Welcome to the beginning of the modern world!  Today we'll begin our studies of the Renaissance with a brief review of humanism, individualism, secularism, and materialism.  Then, we'll split into teams to create "biographical" presentations of select Italian city-states in the 15th century.

Italian City-State Biography Project Description:   Each of you will be in a group with 2 other students to research and create a presentation on an Italian city-state (Florence, Milan, Naples, Rome/Papal States, or Venice) during the Renaissance.  Your research should be compiled in a GoogleDoc and shared with all members of your group AND the teacher.  All presentations should include geographic and historical context as well as a description of the unique political, economic, social, and cultural characteristics of the city-state.  For the presentation, you may use a medium of your choice but it must include both audio and visual components.  Grading will be based on the provided rubric.



CPWC Day 52 - Geography of South Asia

Objective:  Consider the unique geography of South Asia.  Utilize topical maps, graphs, and charts to draw conclusions about development and population patterns in South Asia. 

Task:  Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please pick up the reading at the front of class.  Spend the first portion of class completing the close reading assignment.  When you've finished the reading, please pick up the South Asia Investigation and a computer from the cart.  Use the links below and the resources on the Moodle to work through the investigation.  Fin

    • CIA World Factbook Use the "Please select a country to view" drop-down menu OR click on the "South Asia Region" on the world map
    • CIA World Leaders  Use this site to find the CURRENT head of state.
  • Part II - Monetary Unit Exchange Rates 
    • Oanda Currency Converter  Select USD (US Dollar) as the "Currency I have" and 1 for the amount in the left column.  In the right column, select the country to find the name of the currency and the current exchange rate. 
  • Part III - Considering Social, Economic, and Cultural Indicators  Use the bar graphs, pie charts, and maps in the "South Asia Investigation" PowerPoint on the Moodle to answer the questions.
  • Optional Extension - What would your life be like if you lived in South Asia?  Go to  http://www.ifitweremyhome.com/ and select a country.  The website will display a brief list of indicators to illustrate the different standards of living around the world.

HWC Day 48 - Exploring Korea

Objectives: Compare and contrast the geographic features, politics, and economy of North and South Korea.  Analyze the totalitarian Kim regime in North Korea.

Task:  Annyeonghaseyo!  When you arrive to class, please pick up the unit 6 homework from the table. I'll explain each of the assignments and the next due dates for your R&R project.  Then, pick up the "Inside North Korea" video guide from the podium.  After we watch the documentary, we'll compare and contrast society in North Korea and South Korea.
