HWC1.2 Day 31 - Modernization & Conflict in Middle East

Objectives:  Examine Zionism and other nationalist movements in the North Africa and Southwest Asia.  Discuss Orientalism and its role in western perceptions of North Africa and Southwest Asia.  Identify and evaluate significant events in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Task:  As you come into class, please pick up the worksheet packet from the computer cart.  We'll spend the first few minutes of class completing and then discussing this worksheet on cultural diversity and the Kurds.  Then, we'll finish the timeline notes.

Next, we'll discuss the implications of the perspectives charts and Orientalism.  We'll use the Israel map that we colored on Friday to examine the Arab-Israeli conflict.  Finally, we'll end class with notes on the trends that have shaped the Middle East in the past century (see Prezi notes below).

Homework:

  • Wednesday, 3/20 - Student leaders begin editing wiki
  • Friday, 3/22 - Final day for editing FCP wiki
  • Thursday, 4/4 - Mid-Term Exam
