HWC10.11 Day 31 - Modernization, Orientalism, & Conflict in the Middle East

Objectives:  Explain the strengths, weaknesses, and eventual decline of the Ottoman Empire, including the Armenian genocide.   Discuss Orientalism and its role in western perceptions of North Africa and Southwest Asia

Task:  As you come into class, please turn in your perspectives packet on the computer cart and get out your computer.  We'll spend the first portion of the class, adjusting our usernames to include NGE on the FCP Ning.  Then, you'll use your notes (NOT the Internet) to post a response to the Ottoman Empire summary forum on the Moodle.

Next, we'll discuss the implications of the perspectives charts and Orientalism.  We'll also color a map of Israel and the disputed lands.  Finally, we'll end class with notes on the trends that have shaped the Middle East in the past century.
