CPWC Day 6 - Considering Culture

Objective:  Check knowledge and understanding of chapter 1 of Geography.  Establish a basis for studying culture.

Task:  At the beginning of class, you will have a final opportunity to ask any questions about chapter 1 before the reading quiz.  Although you'll be allowed to use your notes for this quiz, your time is limited to 20 minutes.  When you've finished the quiz, please turn it in at the back of the room and pick up "What is Culture?" and "One Hundred Percent American."  Begin reading these articles while you wait for your classmates to finish.

After everyone finishes the quiz, I'll explain how to prepare for Friday's current events activity and we'll begin taking notes on culture.

Homework:
  • Wednesday, September 4 - Geography chapter 1 reading quiz (reading notes may be used on the quiz)
  • Thursday, September 5 - "Why are maps important?" due
  • Thursday, September 5 - "What is Culture?" reading and questions due
  • Friday, September 6 - Foundations Investigation - see reminders at http://around-the-world-in-80-blocks.blogspot.com/2013/08/cpwc-day-4-reading-plans-using-library.html) due
    • Extra credit (10 points) for any Foundations Investigations submitted by 3:00 Thursday
  • Friday, September 6 - Current events discussion (see below)
  • Monday, September 9 - "One Hundred Percent American" reading and questions due in class
Current Events Preparation:
In preparation for Friday's current events discussion, read "World Humanitarian Day: 5 Crises and How You Can Help"  Then, find at least two news stories that expand upon an issue addressed in this article.  For Friday's current events activity, come to class prepared with your articles and at least 5 comments and 3 questions written out.
