CPWC Day 16 - Africa Before & After European Incursion

Objective:  Examine and assess the status of Africa before and after European incursion.  Identify key events and justifications for European imperialism.

Task:  Today we're going to deviate from the pattern of the week to begin an examination of the history of Sub-Saharan Africa.  As you come into class, pick up a white board and a marker from the side of the room.  We're going to spend a few minutes brainstorming to identify existing knowledge of Africa.  Then, you'll work in groups or as individuals to complete a DBQ on great civilizations in Africa.  We'll review the DBQ answers and watch a video clip on the arrival of Islam to West Africa.

The remainder of the class will be devoted to an exploration of the justifications and impact of European imperialism in Africa.  Use the links on the Moodle to complete parts 1 and 2 of this activity.  We will complete part 3 at a later date.

If you finish early, work on your current events assignment or your chapter 18 reading notes for the quiz on Friday.

  • TODAY - Labeled South and East Africa maps
  • Thursday, September 19 - Comment due to current events forum on Moodle by 3:00 pm
