Objective: Examine the impact and implementation of communism in contemporary China. Discuss the legacy of Mao Zedong and analyze evidence to determine whether he was a liberator or an oppressor.
Task: We'll begin class by analyzing the Lynch article discussing the complex historiography of Mao. Together, we'll compile a list of evidence for both arguments. Specifically, we'll examine the Long March, Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. With the remaining hour of class we will watch select segments of the PBS documentary Tank Man (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/tankman/).
