Objective: Examine the impact and implementation of communism in contemporary China. Discuss the legacy of Mao Zedong and analyze evidence to determine whether he was a liberator or an oppressor.
Task: As you come into class, I'll collect your the communism case study you completed for homework. To begin class, you'll read an article about Mao Zedong. Then, you'll work in groups to discuss Mao's goals for China and his actions for implementing these ideas. After we wrap up our discussion we'll look at communism in contemporary China with an examination of the events at Tiananmen Square in June 1989. While you watch Tank Man (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/tankman/) , you'll answer questions on a viewing guide.
