HWC Day 18 - Historiography of Africa

Day 6 - PAW 6

Objectives:  Identify geographic and cultural characteristics of Sub-Saharan Africa.  Examine the history of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Task:  Hujambo!  When you arrive to class, please pick up your whiteboard.  We'll spend the first few minutes of class, discussing your responses to the statements from Wednesday.   Then, we'll seek to  disprove it with the "Africa Before European Arrival" DBQ and select resources on the great empires and civilizations.

Points for Reflection:
  1. Africa "is no historical part of the world; it has no movement or development to exhibit." (German philosopher G.H.F. Hegel ca. 1830s)
  2. "Perhaps in the future there will be some African history to teach but at the present there is none; there is only history of the Europeans in Africa."  (Oxford historian Hugh Trevor-Roper ca. 1963)
