WestCiv Day 2 - Defining "Western" Civilization & Using Primary Documents

Pre-test: Socrative room number 743692

When asked what he thought of Western civilization, Mohandas Gandhi replied, "I think it would be a good idea."

Objectives:  Establish a working definition of "Western civilization."  Define and explain the tools and resources utilized in Western Civilization.

Task:  When you arrive to class, please get out a computer in preparation for a brief pre-test to evaluate your current knowledge of Western civilization.  After you finish the assessment, please pick up "Western Civilization is Still a Cradle of Learning" and the Europe map.  Critically read "...Cradle of Learning" - consider the bias of the author, the central argument, and counter arguments to Bennett's thesis.  Post your reflection as a comment to the "Reflection - Western Civilization" post on the class blog.  If you are unsure on how to use blogger, type up your reflection in Google or Word until I've explained how to use the blog and Diigo

Next, we'll hold our "draft" for primary document posts (PDPs) and primary document comments (PDCs) #1 and #2.   We'll also take a few minutes to review the process for analyzing primary documents. Finally, we'll begin our notes on the geography and cultural background of Europe.
