HWC1.2 Day 45 - China Geography, Religions, & Communism


Objective:  Examine the ideas and influence of indigenous and diffused religions in East Asia.  Discuss contemporary China in relation to the United States and the global community.

Task:  We'll start class with an activity comparing China and the US.  Then, we'll begin our notes on the geography and religions of East Asia.  Next, we'll work on developing historical questions on the Moodle.  Finally, we'll spend the last portion of class reading, "The Chinese Communist Party, Would Mao Recognize the Paradox?" an article about contemporary China.  As you read, be sure to take notes on the following:

  1. What is the main argument of the article?
  2. What evidence does the author use to support his/her argument?
  3. How does this article help us to better understand contemporary China?

Homework:
  • Monday, 4/8 - Unit 4 annotated research sources (3 news stories,  2 primary sources, 1 scholarly journal & 1 secondary source) - Please create a new project in NoodleTools entitled "Europe R&R" and share it with the HWC1.2 Research & Reflection dropbox.
  • Tuesday, 4/9 - China Timeline due in class (see Moodle for instructions)
  • Thursday, 4/11 - Boxer Rebellion fishbowl discussion (come prepared for discussion or observation)
  • Friday, 4/12 - Japan Timeline due in class (see Moodle for instructions)
  • Friday, 4/12 - Historical question (based on units 1-4) posted to HWC1.2 blog by 3:00 pm
  • Monday, 4/15 - Meiji Restoration fishbowl discussion (come prepared for discussion or observation)
  • Monday, 4/15 - FCP outsource clip due on FCP Ning BEFORE class and linked on FCP13-1 wiki by 3:00
  • Tuesday, 4/16 - "Transnationalism" reading quiz (use reading guide to prepare)
  • Wednesday, 4/17 - "Top Ten Things to Know About Korea" reading due in class
  • Wednesday, 4/17 - Constructive responses to at least 3 historical questions (posted as comments to historical questions) - THERE SHOULD BE A MAXIMUM OF 3 COMMENTS TO EACH QUESTION!
  • Friday, 4/19 - Unit 5 Test
  • Wednesday, 4/24 - FCP final video due on FCP Ning (by 7:30 am)
