Objective: Identify the causes and consequences of Japanese expansion in the 19th and 20th centuries. Consider the impact of the Meiji Restoration on the history, culture, and politics of Japan.
Task: As you come into class, please pick up the papers on the side table. I'll spend the first portion of class explaining the research and reflection paper. Then, we'll continue class with the Meiji fishbowl discussion. After a short debriefing session, we'll analyze the Rescript on Education as a document of Japan's early modern period. Finally, we'll end class with notes on Japanese imperialism during the 20th century.
