CPWC Day 57 - Exploring Contemporary South Asia

Objective:  Analyze the relationship between arable land and population density.  Utilize topical maps, graphs, and charts to draw conclusions about development and population patterns in South Asia.   Identify the impact of tectonic plates, the himalayas, and monsoons in South Asia.


Pd. 3-4 Task:  When you arrive to class, please get out your computer.  We'll spend the first portion of class completing the South Asia investigation.  Use the links and resources (below and on the Moodle) to complete the packet.  Finally, for the last portion of class, you'll complete a packet exploring the Himalayas and the monsoons.

Pd. 6-9 Task:  When you arrive to class, please get out your close reading homework for a brief discussion.  Next, you'll participate in a demonstration to explore the relationship between land area and population.  Finally, for the last portion of class, you'll complete a packet exploring the Himalayas and the monsoons.   Before leaving class, you'll complete and turn in a 3-2-1 exit ticket.

  • Part I - Country Comparisons
    • CIA World Factbook Use the "Please select a country to view" drop-down menu OR click on the "South Asia Region" on the world map
    • CIA World Leaders  Use this site to find the CURRENT head of state.
  • Part II - Monetary Unit Exchange Rates 
    • Oanda Currency Converter  Select USD (US Dollar) as the "Currency I have" and 1 for the amount in the left column.  In the right column, select the country to find the name of the currency and the current exchange rate. 
  • Part III - Considering Social, Economic, and Cultural Indicators  Use the bar graphs, pie charts, and maps in the "South Asia Investigation" PowerPoint on the Moodle to answer the questions.
  • Optional Extension - What would your life be like if you lived in South Asia?  Go to  http://www.ifitweremyhome.com/ and select a country.  The website will display a brief list of indicators to illustrate the different standards of living around the world.
