West Civ Day 1 - What is History?

When asked what he thought of Western civilization, Mohandas Gandhi replied, "I think it would be a good idea."

Objectives:  Establish a working definition for "history."  Identify the purpose for studying history.

Task:  Welcome to Western Civilization!  When you arrive to class, please choose a seat with textbooks.  Then, get out a piece of scratch paper or open Notability to answer the questions below:


  1. Why are you in this course?
  2. Why study history?

We'll begin our time together exploring these two essential questions.  Then, you'll take a pre-test to evaluate your current knowledge of Western Civilization.  Finally, I'll explain the course syllabus and describe course requirements.  Finally, if there is any time remaining, you'll begin reading "Western Civilization is Still the Cradle of Learning."  

Homework:
  • Tuesday, January 24 - Read through Class Regulations & Course Syllabus BEFORE class
  • Wednesday, January 25 - "Western Civilization...Cradle of Learning" rdg. due for discussion
  • Wednesday, January 25 - Student Information Sheet (GoogleForm in Schoology) due
  • Wednesday, January 25 - Parent Information Sheet & parent email due (Google Form in Schoology)
