WestCiv Day 1 - Welcome!

When asked what he thought of Western civilization, Mohandas Gandhi replied, "I think it would be a good idea."

Objectives:  Introduce class policies and procedures.  Establish a working definition of "western civilization."

Task:  Welcome to Western Civilization!  Despite our shortened class period, we have a lot to accomplish today.  First, we'll read through the rules and regulations and distribute/sign-out the textbook, The Western Heritage, and the first volume of Aspects of Western Civilization.   Then, while your logging on to the Moodle, I'll distribute the course syllabus and source list.  Finally, you'll take a pre-test to evaluate your current knowledge of western civilization.  As you hand in your pre-test, I'll distribute your homework, "Western Civilization is Still a Cradle of Learning" and the Europe map.  As you read this document, please consider the bias of the author, the central argument, and counter-arguments to this editorial.

To end class, we'll continue our notes on the geography and culture of "Europe" and begin our examination of Ancient Greece.
