CPWC Day 53 - Comparing China & Japan

UNICEF members will be collecting donations for typhoon Haiyan relief efforts during all lunches this week.

Objective:  Assess the causes and consequences of Japan's expansion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Task:  When you arrive to class, please get out your reading homework.   Work with the your group to identify similarities and differences in your analysis of the text.  After a brief discussion, I'll distribute the primary documents for analysis.  You'll work with a partner to analyze the assigned documents.  Finally, after analyzing the documents you'll construct an essay comparing and contrasting the responses of Japan and China to the West.

Essay Details & Options:
Use the background reading, your knowledge from class discussions, and the documents to construct a 3-5 paragraph essay answering ONE of the questions below.
  • Compare Japan and China in terms of their overall attitudes toward the West.
  • Describe the factors that best help explain the differences between China and Japan in the way they responded to the West.

Homework:
  • TODAY - China & Japan Respond to the West 
  • Thursday, November 14 - "Top 10 Things to Know About Korea"
  • Friday, November 15 - Japan & China essay due by 3:00
  • Monday, November 18 - Unit 5 Test (includes East Asia map)
