CPWC Day 5 - Elements of Culture

Objective:   Discuss the characteristics of culture.  Establish a basis for studying culture.

Task:  Good morning!  I hope you all had wonderful holiday weekend.  When you arrive to class, please use your i-Pad to look up and record the definitions for the following terms:

• Mores
• Taboos
• Enculturation
• Acculturation
• Diffusion
• Interdependence
• Ethnocentrism

After everyone's had the opportunity to look up the terms, we'll play a short game to review content from last week.  Then, we'll return to our seats to take notes on the elements of culture.  As always, you may either write out your own notes or use the guided notes provided on Schoology.  Finally, you'll work in small groups to examine and explain the ways in which culture is demonstrated on a poster from the "Material World" series.  

Homework:

• Thursday, September 10 - Narrative, drawing, or captioned photograph detailing 7 elements of culture submitted to Schoology dropbox by 3:00 pm
• Monday,  September 14 - Unit 1 Quiz (Themes of Geography, Characteristics of Culture, Elements of Culture, Cultural Regions Map)

Extending class discussions:

HWC Day 5 - Origins & Collaboration

Objectives:  Discuss the origins of man.  Define history and the social sciences as they will be utilized in HWC.

Task:  Good morning!  I hope you all had a relaxing weekend!  We'll begin class with a brief discussion of the "Becoming Human" documentary you viewed over the weekend.  Specifically, we'll examine the argument presented and consider the complexities of the social sciences.  Then, you'll have the remainder of class to work with your group and create a video presentation on your section of the Primer text.

Special Notes:

1. If you haven't done so already, stop by the library to pick up issues of History Today and Current History for questions 42 & 43 on the Foundations Investigation.
2. I have filled in student names for the PDPs, PDCs, and SJSs.  Please check the spreadsheet to make sure that you have been assigned for all three tasks.

CPWC Day 4 - Geography & Culture

Objective:  Identify and label oceans, continents, and cultural regions on a world map.  Discuss the characteristics of culture.

Task: Happy Thursday!  Its hard to believe that we've already arrived at the end of our first week.  When you arrive to class, please get out your reading notes.  We'll spend the first portion of class reviewing your reading homework.  Then, we'll finish labeling and coloring our cultural regions map.  Next, we'll head back to our regular seats to take some notes on culture.  Finally, we'll end class with a GoogleSearch to find images illustrating the impact of geography on culture.

Homework:

• TODAY- Geography chapter 1, section 2 reading notes due in class

HWC Day 4 - GGS Quiz

*Shortened Class - Digital Citizenship*

Objectives:  Assess knowledge and understanding of Guns, Germs, & Steel.

Task:  Happy Thursday!  Its hard to believe we've made it to the end of our first week already!  When you arrive to class, please get out your GGS reading notes in preparation for the quiz.  You'll have 35 minutes to complete the quiz, including a 10 minute window to reference your notes.  If you have time over the holiday weekend, try to work ahead on some of the homework assignments listed below.

Special Notes:
