CPWC Day 52 - Geography of South Asia

Objective:  Consider the unique geography of South Asia.  Utilize topical maps, graphs, and charts to draw conclusions about development and population patterns in South Asia. 

Task:  Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please pick up the reading at the front of class.  Spend the first portion of class completing the close reading assignment.  When you've finished the reading, please pick up the South Asia Investigation and a computer from the cart.  Use the links below and the resources on the Moodle to work through the investigation.  Fin

Homework:
  • TODAY - Chapter 24, section 1 reading notes due
  • Wednesday, April 22 - South Asia Map due in class (homework completion quiz)
  • Thursday, April 23 - Chapter 24, section 3 reading notes due
  • Friday, April 24 - Chapter 26, section 1 reading notes due (for those on the field trip, these will be checked on Monday)
  • Friday, April 24 - Field trip to Museum of Jewish Heritage, NYC (see above for reminders)
  • Monday, April 27 - Chapter 26, section 2 reading notes due
  • Wednesday, April 29 - Unit 6 reading quiz (24.1, 24.3, 26.1, 26.2 - notes may be used)

Resources for South Asia Investigation:
  • Part I - Country Comparisons
    • CIA World Factbook Use the "Please select a country to view" drop-down menu OR click on the "South Asia Region" on the world map
    • CIA World Leaders  Use this site to find the CURRENT head of state.
  • Part II - Monetary Unit Exchange Rates 
    • Oanda Currency Converter  Select USD (US Dollar) as the "Currency I have" and 1 for the amount in the left column.  In the right column, select the country to find the name of the currency and the current exchange rate. 
  • Part III - Considering Social, Economic, and Cultural Indicators  Use the bar graphs, pie charts, and maps in the "South Asia Investigation" PowerPoint on the Moodle to answer the questions.
  • Optional Extension - What would your life be like if you lived in South Asia?  Go to  http://www.ifitweremyhome.com/ and select a country.  The website will display a brief list of indicators to illustrate the different standards of living around the world.
