HWC Day 20 - Condensed History of Africa

Day 2 - PAW 2

Objective:   Explore select historical developments in sub-Saharan Africa.

Task:  Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please get out a piece of scratch paper, Notability, or a whiteboard and respond to the statements below:

  1. Africa "is not historical part of the world; it has no movement or development to exhibit."  (German philosopher G.H.F. Hegel ca. 1830)
  2. "Perhaps in the future there will be some African history to teach but at the present there is none; there is only history of the Europeans in Africa." (Oxford historian Hugh Trevor-Roper ca. 1963)
Next, we'll form a discussion circle to review the DBQ and the Scramble for Africa.  At the end of class we'll revisit the statements above to determine the validity of these ideas.

  • Monday, February 26 - Part B of Africa Regional Study ("Confronting the Past") due in class
