Day 2 - PAW 2
Objective: Explore select historical developments in sub-Saharan Africa.
Task: Good morning! When you arrive to class, please get out a piece of scratch paper, Notability, or a whiteboard and respond to the statements below:
- Africa "is not historical part of the world; it has no movement or development to exhibit." (German philosopher G.H.F. Hegel ca. 1830)
- "Perhaps in the future there will be some African history to teach but at the present there is none; there is only history of the Europeans in Africa." (Oxford historian Hugh Trevor-Roper ca. 1963)
Next, we'll form a discussion circle to review the DBQ and the Scramble for Africa. At the end of class we'll revisit the statements above to determine the validity of these ideas.
