HWC Day 3 - Culture & Collaboration

Objectives:  Discuss the origins of man.  Define history and the social sciences as they will be utilized in HWC.

Task:  Good afternoon!   To begin class, you'll work with your group to apply the "What is Culture? Notes."  Specifically, each group will select a "Material World" poster and identify the  seven elements of culture in the image.  Take a picture of the poster and identify all seven elements of culture with annotations.  Then, you'll have the remainder of class to work with your group and create a video presentation in EduCreations Whiteboard on your section of the Primer text.

Objective:  Investigate the manner in which society impacts the individual.

Task:  Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please open and complete the "Who Am I? Questionnaire?" (in Sociology Unit 1 folder).  We'll begin our investigation of sociology with a discussion about this activity.  Finally, I'll explain how to use VoiceThread and you'll have the remainder of class to work on your "Pioneers of Sociology" projects.

CPWC Day 3 - Mapping Our World

Objective:  Consider the concepts addressed in chapter 1, section 1 of the text.  Identify and label oceans, continents, and cultural regions on a world map.

Task: When you arrive to class, please complete the "Show What You Know" pre-test.  While you're taking the pre-test, I'll come around and check your reading notes.   When you finish, please work on your chapter 1, section 2 reading notes.  After the pre-test, we'll complete the "Lines of Latitude & Longitude" worksheet together in class.  Then, we'll spend the remainder of class labeling and coloring the major cultural regions on a world map.  Finally, we'll spend the last portion of class discussing "Dreaming Upside Down."

HWC Day 2 - Critical Thinking, Collaboration, & GGS

Objectives:  Identify the characteristics of collaboration and a critical thinker.  Analyze and critique the arguments presented in Guns, Germs, & Steel.

Task:  Good afternoon!  When you arrive to class, please get out your i-Pad and DRAW the characteristics of a critical thinker.  We'll spend the first portion of class discussing the process of critical thinking.  Then, we'll extend our examination to review collaboration in HWC and I'll explain the requirements for your Primer project.  Next, you'll engage in a discussion of Guns, Germs, & Steel.  Finally, if there is any time remaining, you'll continue working with your group to create your Primer presentation.

Soc Day 2 - Pioneers Research

Objective:  Utilize library databases and select web resources to research the biography and contributions of select sociologists.

Task:  Today, we'll begin our exploration of sociology with research on some of the pioneers in the field.  We'll be heading to the library and you'll have the entire class to research your individual (see assignments at the bottom of this post). As you investigate your sociologist, focus on:
  1. Relevant biographical information (ex. When & where did he/she live?  What were the political/social/economic conditions that contributed to his/her perspective?)
  2. Contributions to the field (ex. Essential concepts and ideas that shaped sociology)
If you work efficiently, you should be able to finish your research AND audio posts to our VoiceThread by the end of class on Monday.  You should use AT LEAST 2 different sources to gather information - you must share your citations with my "Pioneers of Sociology - Spring 16" dropbox in Noodletools.

If you finish early, please read "What is Sociology?" in preparation for Friday's discussion or work on your unit 1 vocabulary.

HWC Day 1 - Welcome!

Welcome to Honors World Cultures!  This semester we'll explore the history, geography, & contemporary issues of our world.  I encourage you to follow the news and to make connections between the content in this class and other subject areas.  In order to succeed in HWC, it is essential to establish effective, consistent work and study habits.  If, at any point, you find yourself confused or overwhelmed please don't hesitate to see or email me.

Objectives:  Introduce class procedures and expectations.  Assess knowledge of current global issues.

Task: Good afternoon and kudos for choosing to take this reading and writing intensive course!  Although it may seem that you've been preparing for HWC for a long time, we've finally arrived at our official, first day of class.  Today, we'll read through the class rules and procedures and distribute your textbooks, Globalization & Diversity and Civilization Primer.

I'll collect your rubric and reading notes on The World is Flat and the rubric for Guns, Germs, & Steel comments.  Then, I'll assign the first step in your first group project.  We'll also define cooperation and collaboration.

Finally, we'll spend the last 30 minutes of class taking the current events quiz.  When you've finished the quiz, please begin reading and taking notes on your section of the Primer and/or read the GGS reviews (available via Schoology).  Please finish the Primer reading notes for TOMORROW and the GGS reviews for Friday.

CPWC Day 79 - Latin America in the 20th Century

Objective:  Consider the course and implications of the rule of General Pinochet in Chile.  Investigate changes and developments in 20th century Latin America.


Task:  Buenos dias!  When you arrive to class, please complete "Colonies & Independent States" (the 3rd & 4th pages of "Spanish Towns in the Americas."  While you work through the map, I'll finish checking your homework.  Then, we'll discuss Pinochet in Chile as an example of the military strongmen that rose to power in the early-mid twentieth century.  Finally, we'll wrap up class with a reading on Latin America at the end of the twentieth century.

Objectives:  Examine various paths to independence in Latin America.

Objectives:  Evaluate the social hierarchy of colonial Latin America.  Discuss various paths to independence in Latin America.

Task:  Buenos dias!  We'll spend the first few minutes of class discussing the historical significance of Toussaint L'Ouverture.  Then, we'll divide into groups to analyze paintings illustrating social classes in Latin America.  Finally, we'll end with an examination of independence movements in Latin America.

CPWC Day 74 - Colonization of Latin America

Objective:  Examine the geography of Latin America.  Compare and contrast the Incas and the Aztecs.  Consider the impact of Spanish colonization on the peoples and lands of Latin America.

Objectives:   Consider the unique cultures of pre-Columbian peoples in Central America.  Review the geography of Latin America.  Compare and contrast the descriptions of Aztec and Spanish accounts of Cortez.

Objective:  Review essential concepts on the history, geography, culture, and contemporary issues of Southeast Asia, Australia, & Oceania.

Task:  Happy new year!  When you arrive to class, please read "Southeast Asia Launches Huge Trade Bloc" (Wall Street Journal, 12/30/2015) OR "What Climate Change Will Mean for the People of Oceania" (Smithsonian, 3/27/2015) OR "Australia Backs Multiculturalism Despite Extremist Threats" (Financial Times, 12/17/2015).  After you've read the article, please post a reflection to Schoology and begin your reading notes for the next unit.  We'll spend a few minutes discussing the articles before creating summary notes to wrap-up unit 7.
