HWC Day 68 - Spice Trade in Southeast Asia

Objective:  Locate and identify key locations on the map of Southeast Asia, Australia, and Oceania.  Summarize the impact of imperialism on the people of Southeast Asia.

Task:  Happy Friday!  We'll begin class with a discussion on "A Taste for Adventure" and the spice trade in East Indies.  Next, you'll begin "Considering Southeast Asia" on the Moodle.  Finally, we'll begin our exploration of Cambodia in preparation for our study of the Killing Fields.

Congratulations NetGenEd Award Winners!

On May 20, the period 10-11 Honors World Cultures class watched the NetGenEd 2013 awards ceremony.  In November, students began work on this project when they read and blogged about Grown Up Digital by Don Tapscott.  In February, students joined the Flat Classroom Project Ning and developed relationships with students in other schools through this educational social network.  These relationships continued to grow as students collaboratively created a page on the NetGenEd 2013 wiki.  Finally, students planned and created a multimedia project to demonstrate their understanding of the topic.  

Out of 115 total videos submitted for judging, 9 Saucon Valley students were recognized for excellence.

• In topic A, Massively Open Online Courses, Grace earned a 2nd place award for her video, "Collaborating on MOOCs," and Davis won a 1st place award for his video, "Safari for Technology."
• In topic B, Tablet Computing, Bridget earned an honorable mention for her video, "Tablet Computing: Integrity," and Mark won a 1st place award for his video, "FOCUS on the Camera of a Tablet."
• In topic C, Games and Gamification, Maggie earned an honorable mention for her video, "Gamification and its Impact on Our Children," and Vanessa won a 1st place award for her video, "The Unbelievable Speed of Gamification."
• In topic D, Learning Analytics, Brendan earned an honorable mention for his video, "Scrutiny Style," and Rachel won a 3rd place award for her video, "Learning with the Net Generation."
• In topic F, Wearable Technology, Candice won a 1st place award for her video, "Entertainment and Wearable Technology."

After judges choose winners in each of the topic categories, the first and second place winners are judged by a meta judge for overall project winners.  The following Saucon Valley students were recognized as overall project winners:

On a personal note, I would like to thank all students for successfully participating and completing this extensive, and sometimes frustrating, project.

HWC10.11 Day 79 - NetGenEd Awards & Cambodia Genocide Wrap-up

Objective:    Summarize the impact of imperialism on the people and cultures of Southeast Asia.  Examine totalitarianism, nationalism, and democracy in Myanmar.

Task:  We'll use the first part of class to watch a recording of the NetGenEd Awards ceremony.  After we've congratulated the winners, we'll finish up The Killing Fields and discuss the genocide in Cambodia.

HWC10.11 Day 61 - South Asia Geography

Objective:  Identify and label countries, cities, bodies of water, and geographic features of South Asia.

Task:  To start class,  we'll briefly discuss the Student Summit.  For this event, you will need to create a collage to visually represent your experience in the NetGenEd project and create a script (30-45 seconds) that you will read from on the summit day.

Then, we'll begin our examination of South Asia with a game to check your knowledge of the South Asia map.  Next, we'll take some time to watch and participate in a demonstration on arable land and population density in South Asia.  Finally, you'll spend the last portion of class working through a geography "workshop."

Objective:  Compare and contrast the societies in North Korea and South Korea.

Task:  Today, we'll focus on the totalitarian state of North Korea established by Kim Il-Sung and perpetuated by Kim Jong-Ill and Kim Jong-Un.  After a brief discussion to remind you of the requirements for the FCP video.  Then, we'll spend the majority of the remainder of class watching State of Mind, a documentary about North Korea's mass games.

HWC10.11 Day 57 - Korea in the 20th Century

Objective:  Compare and contrast the societies in North Korea and South Korea.

Task:  Today, we'll focus on the developments on the Korean peninsula in the 20th century.  We'll begin class using the ABC-Clio World Geography database to read about South Korea.  Specifically, read the "Overview," "History," and "Contemporary Issues."  Then, you'll examine the origins and course of the Korean War and the lasting implications.  Finally, we'll end class with an introduction to the totalitarian state established by Kim Il-Sung in North Korea.

HWC10.11 Day 55 - Modern Japan (cont.)

Objective:  Assess the causes and consequences of Japanese expansion in the 20th century.

Task: As you come into class, please get out a pencil and pull your desks apart in preparation for the reading quiz.  You'll have 40 minutes to complete the quiz, including a 5 minute window with your notes and the reading.

When you've finished the quiz, please take it to the back of the room and pick up the Rescript on Education.  Read the summary and the Rescript - identify and highlight aspects of Japanese culture.  What does the Rescript tell us about the Meiji Restoration?

I'll spend the a few minutes of class demonstrating how to upload your outsource clip to the FCP Ning and hyperlinking on the FCP13-1 wiki.  Then, after we've finished our discussion on the Meiji Restoration, we'll finish our notes on modern Japan.

Objective:  Examine the ideas and influence of indigenous and diffused religions in East Asia.  Discuss contemporary China in relation to the United States and the global community.

HWC10.11 Day 47 - Sesame Street & Historical Questions

Note:  Wiki editing should be completed by Friday, April 5.  Please make sure that all portions of your wiki page are complete.

Objective:  Examine the impact of global media on local cultures and the impact of local cultures on global media.  Discuss and practice the construction of historical questions.

Task:  As you come into class, please get out your computer and turn it on.  Do NOT log in!  Mr. Hanssen will be updating the computers so that we can participate in a student summit for NetGenEd.  After all of the computers have been turned on, please hand in your wiki editing and collaboration rubric.

Then, get out a blank piece of paper and a pen or pencil.  We're going to spend the first portion of class watching clips from a documentary, "The World According to Sesame Street."  As you watch, take notes on:

1. Ideas/concepts that reinforce and/or expand on things we've already learned
2. New ideas/concepts presented in the documentary
3. Questions that arise as you watch film

Next you'll use your notes comment to "The World According to Sesame Street" Reflection.  

After everyone has completed their reflection, we'll spend a few minutes reviewing the discipline of history and discussing historical questions.  Finally, you'll use the last portion of class with a partner brainstorming for your NetGenEd video.  Remember, your video should address your assigned topic & category, must be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 5 minutes, and needs to include an outsource clip created by a student from another school.

HWC10.11 Day 44 - Revolution & Change

Objective:  Investigate the political and social revolutions that emerged in Europe beginning in the mid-eighteenth century.  Examine contemporary social, economic, and political issues in Europe.

Task:  As you come into class, please get out your French Revolution video guide and we'll review the main ideas for this time period.  Then, we'll spend some time examining the Industrial Revolution and social responses to the social, political, and economic shift.  Next, we'll spend the remainder of class reviewing the Europe regional study.

Directions for FCP Sounding Board Feedback:

1. Request to join the http://fcp13-1.flatclassroomproject.org/ using your NetGenEd username (ex. JessicaF_SVHS_NGE) - be sure to comment that "I am a student in Mrs. Friday's sounding board classroom."  
2. Review the criteria and guidelines on the provided rubric and at http://fcp13-1.flatclassroomproject.org/Peer+Evaluation+Criteria+%26+Summary 
3. Go to your assigned topic page (linked on the homepage AND on the sidebar).  Read the background & explanation of the topic.  
4. Click on "Team A."  Use the guidelines and the provided rubric to critically review the page.  Write your notes on the back of the rubric.  
5. Once you have thoroughly examined the page, go to the discussion thread at the top of the wiki.  Find the post title "Sounding Board Feedback" and post a narrative evaluation of the page.   
6. Then, scroll to the bottom of the http://fcp13-1.flatclassroomproject.org/Peer+Evaluation+Criteria+%26+Summary.  Fill in your the name and complete the "FCP13-1 Sounding Board Feedback Form."  Repeat this process for the "Team B" wiki page.

HWC10.11 Day 43 - Sounding Board & Industrialization

Objectives:  Post research to the NetGenEd Diigo group and begin contributing to the NetGenEd2013 wiki.  Investigate the political and social revolutions that emerged in Europe beginning in the mid-eighteenth century.

Task:  We'll spend the first 15 minutes working on the NetGenEd project.  Continue editing the wiki and contributing to the NetGenEd Diigo group.  For each edit to the wiki, be sure to "save with comment" and explain your contribution in the discussion thread.  By the end of TODAY, I expect that EACH of you will have made at least 6 edits to your topic page AND at least 8 comments to the discussion thread for your topic.  Remember, you should be checking the wiki at least twice a day, continue posting resources to the Diigo group, and edit the wiki (see e-mail with reminders).

Next, you are going to be peer reviewers for the Flat Classroom Project.  This is a very important task that requires you to critically evaluate the work of other students and to provide constructive feedback to participants.

Finally, we'll spend the last portion of class reviewing the French Revolution and beginning our examination of industrialization.

Task:  We'll spend the first 15 minutes working on the NetGenEd project.  Continue editing the wiki and contributing to the NetGenEd Diigo group.  For each edit to the wiki, be sure to "save with comment" and explain your contribution in the discussion thread.  By the end of TODAY, I expect that EACH of you will have made at least 4 edits to your topic page AND at least 6 comments to the discussion thread for your topic.  Remember, you should be checking the wiki at least twice a day, continue posting resources to the Diigo group, and edit the wiki (see e-mail with reminders).

We'll spend the next portion of class examining documents.  As you read each document, answer the following questions:

1. "Bartholomew's Day Massacre" - Summarize the events of August 24, 1572.  What initiated this event?  Why was this a turning point in the French Wars of Religion?
2.  "The Destruction at Magdeburg" - Summarize the events of May 1631.  What initiated these events?  Why was this a turning point in the Thirty Years War?
3. "Divine Right of Kings" - Answer the questions on the worksheet.

Finally, you'll work with a partner to complete a video summary as you watch a video on the French Revolution.

HWC10.11 Day 41 - Reformation, Enlightenment, & Absolutism

Objectives:  Post research to the NetGenEd Diigo group and begin contributing to the NetGenEd2013 wiki.  Evaluate the social, cultural, and political changes of Europe between 1450 and 1700.

HWC10.11 Day 40 - Europe Map Quiz & Reformation

Objectives:  Assess knowledge and understanding of Europe geography.  Post research to the NetGenEd Diigo group and begin contributing to the NetGenEd2013 wiki.  Evaluate the social, cultural, and political changes of Europe between 1450 and 1700.

Task:  We'll spend the first 35 minutes of class taking the Europe map quiz.  After you finish,  please turn the quiz in on the computer cart, pick up the mid-term exam study guide, and get out your computer.  Then, log-on to work on the NetGenEd project for 15 minutes.  Continue editing the wiki and contributing to the NetGenEd Diigo group.  For each edit to the wiki, be sure to "save with comment" and explain your contribution in the discussion thread.  Remember, you should be checking the wiki at least twice a day, continue posting resources to the Diigo group, and edit the wiki (see e-mail with reminders).
