Congratulations FCP13-2 Award Winners!

The awards ceremony for the Flat Classroom Project (13-2) was held on December 17.  In June, students began this project when they read and blogged about Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat.  Then, in September, students joined the Flat Classroom Ning and developed relationships with students in their "global classroom."  These relationships grew as students worked on a page of the FCP13-2 wiki.  As the final component of the project, each student planned and created a multimedia project to demonstrate their understanding of the topic.

Out of the 142 submitted videos, 13 students from Saucon Valley were recognized for excellence.

• In topic #1, "Connecting the World On-Line," Jake earned second place for his video, "All Online: CWO Innovation, Invention, & Prediction."
• In topic #3,  "How Workflow Software Can Enhance Productivity & Communication," Angela earned third place for her video, "FCP Video," and  Kyle earned first place for his video, "Innovations to a World Flattener: The Cloud."
• In topic #4, "The Changing Shape of Information," Sarah earned second place for her video, "The AIL and the Changing Shape of Information."
• In topic #5, "Web2.0 Tools for Sharing Information," Danielle earned second place for her video, "Video Games: How We Play."
• Saucon Valley swept the category in topic #6, "Globalization & Outsourcing," Annika earned third place for her video, "Globalization and Play: On the Correlation Between," Lara's video, "Acting With Empathy in Bangalore," tied for second place with Kenny's video, "Outsourcing: A Dynamic Force with Deep Roots," and Morgan earned first place for her video, "Globalization and Outsourcing Overview."
• In topic #9, "Mobile & Ubiquitous," Taylor earned third place for her video, "Geocaching, The Hunt."
• In topic #10, "Virtual Communication," Adam earned third place for his video, "The Story of Skype," and Zach earned first place for his video, "Virtual Communication Innovation: Creating Tangible Data."
• In topic #11, "Wireless Connectivity," Haylee earned first place for her video, "Wireless Connectivity in the Years."

After judges chose winners in each topic, a meta-judge evaluated the first and second place winners from each category.  This judge then selected the overall project winners.  

I'm pleased to announce that the videos by Zach & Kyle tied for second place out of all videos submitted!  The overall winner for the project was "Importance of WWW" by KateM_AAHS.

A special thank you to all students for your patience, perseverance, and excellence.  I am so proud of all of you for your contributions!

HWC Day 70 - FCP Wrap-Up & Southeast Asia

Objective:  Discuss and reflect on the Flat Classroom Project.  Summarize the impact of imperialism on the people of Southeast Asia.

Task:  We'll spend the first portion of class with our in-class FCP student summit.  During this activity, we'll discuss the advantages and challenges of this global collaboration.  After the summit, we'll finish our review of "Considering Southeast Asia" and spend some time identifying key terms associated with the genocide in Cambodia.

Our studies in the news:  "To Shape Young Palestinians, Hamas Creates its Own Textbooks" (New York Times, 11/4/13)  The Hamas movement is deviating from the approved Palestinian Authority curriculum, using the new texts as part of a broader push to infuse the next generation with its militant ideology.

HWC Day 45 - FCP Video Creation & the Silk Road

Objective:   Create a multimedia video that communicates with a general audience a theme from the FCP.  To actively share original content about the topics being researched and analyzed.

Task:  Since we're wrapping up the wiki collaboration, its now time to move on to the video creation portion of the project.  For the second phase of the Flat Classroom Project, each of you will create a 2 to 5 minute video that will include an outsourced clip from a student in another school.  I'll explain the steps to creating a video and we'll watch some videos from past projects.  You'll use the remainder of class, to work on the FCP wiki, your storyboard, or the Silk Road activity.

Directions for FCP Video Creation and Outsourcing
Step 1 - Building Your Story:  Go to your topic page of the FCP wiki and scroll down to the "Video Artifacts" section.  Click on your assigned video category to learn more about your assignment (see below).  Construct a detailed storyboard and script that addresses the topic from Dan Pink (see our VoiceThread) and the flattener from Tom Friedman.   Use either the presentation app in Google or the following paper format to create your storyboard: http://saucontechhelp.wikispaces.com/file/view/blankstoryboard.pdf  As you construct your story, consider the specifications for the video: http://helps.flatclassroomproject.org/Video+Specifications#Copyright%20and%20Citations-Video%20Number%20Specifications

Step 2 - Outsourcing:  At this point, you simply need to have a good, overall idea of what your video will be about.  Once you have this figured out, you will need to fill out an outsource request clip at http://fcp13-2.flatclassroomproject.org/Outsourced+Team+A (requests due on Wednesday, November 6).  The next step will require you to submit an outsource clip to someone else and to create a storyboard for your video (links to finished outsource clips due on Tuesday, November 12).   Please watch the video below for detailed instructions on how to begin conceptualizing your video and on how to post an outsource clip request.

 
Step 3 - Tool Selection: Choose a tool to create your video. You might consider I-movie, Windows MediaMaker, or SlideRocket.  If you choose SlideRocket, you will need to take a couple of extra steps to make your presentation into a video.

HWC Day 42 - Europe Wrap-up & Wiki

Objective:  Post research to the FCP Diigo group and contribute to the FCP13-2 wiki to facilitate collaborative research.  Create graphic organizers to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of modern Europe.

Task:   We'll begin today's class with a gallery walk to examine the eras of modern Europe graphic organizers.  Then, you'll work with a partner to review the significant people of modern Europe.  Finally, you'll spend the last portion of class editing the FCP wiki.

HWC Day 41 - Map Quiz

Objective:  Post research to the FCP Diigo group and begin contributing to the FCP13-2 wiki to facilitate collaborative research.  Create graphic organizers to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of modern Europe.

Task:   For the first 40 minutes of class, you'll complete the Europe map quiz.  After you finish, turn the quiz in and get out your computer to work quietly on FCP until your classmates have finished.  Then, you'll meet with your groups to finish your modern European ear graphic organizer.

I'll spend a few minutes reviewing Diigo and the process for editing the FCP wiki (see also FCP Wiki Instructions).  Use the FCP Diigo group and the current events posts from your summer reading assignment to help you get started on your research.  When adding your own sources to the FCP Diigo group, be sure to annotate and to follow the project tagging standards.  Over the next week, we'll spend 20 minutes of each class working on the wiki.  However, you should also be checking the discussion thread, gathering research, and adding to the wiki at least one other time each day.  Your grade will be based upon both the quality and quantity of your contributions (see FCP checklist on the Moodle).

HWC Day 37 - Renaissance, Reformation, & FCP Wiki Editing

To all that attended the field trip on Friday, THANK YOU for a wonderful trip!

Objective:  Evaluate the social, cultural, and political changes of Europe between 1400 and 1750. Post research to the FCP Diigo group and begin contributing to the FCP13-2 wiki to facilitate collaborative research.

Task:   To begin class, we'll identify the spirit of the Renaissance with a comparison of artwork from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.  Next, we'll examine the growth of the money economy with a brief video clip.  Finally, we'll start work on the Flat Classroom Project wiki.

I'll "walk" you through the wiki and explain project expectations (see also FCP Wiki Instructions).  Complete the following tasks ASAP:

1. Add your name to the team members list at the bottom of your topic page.  Link your name to your page of the FCP Ning.
2. On the discussion thread, leave a message on the wiki discussion tab for your team members describing what you think your topic is about.
3. On the FCP Ning, if you have not done so already: a) "friend" your student leader and comment on his/her handshake, b) "friend" and comment to the handshakes of the other members in your box on the grid.
4. Each of you should post AT LEAST 5 resources to the FCP Diigo group and make AT LEAST 2 contributions/comments to the FCP13-2 wiki each day.
