HWC Day 7 - Using The Library

Objectives:  Identify and utilize library resources necessary for HWC.

Task:  Today, we'll spend most of our class-time in the library reviewing tools and sources that will be useful in HWC.  When you arrive to class, please download "Foundations Investigation" from Schoology to Notability.

At the library Mrs. Sams will give a brief presentation and then you'll use the remainder of class to work on the "Foundations Investigation."
  • The first page is just people - probably best to use Google b/c some of these people have taken office relatively recently.
  • For top of page 2, use the cultural regions map in your Globalization & Diversity textbook.  Mrs. Sams will review the historical sources on the bottom of the page.
  • For page 3,  you will need to use a PRINT copy of History Today (question #48) and Current History (question #49).  Responses must be posted on the class blog

Task: Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please read and answer questions for "100% American."  After a brief discussion, we'll get into small groups for a short activity that demonstrates the integration of all 7 elements of culture.  Then, you'll watch "Man and His Culture" to consider the ways in which culture, and our perceptions of culture, have changed since the 1950s.  Finally, we'll end class with a reflection on culture.

HWC Day 4 -GGS Quiz, PDP Lottery, & Culture Application

Objectives: Assess knowledge and understanding of the arguments presented in  Guns, Germs, & Steel.

Task:  Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please get out your index card in preparation for your quiz.  You'll have 30 minutes to complete your quiz. When you finish, please work on one of the upcoming homework assignments.

After everyone has finished the quiz, I'll explain the Primary Document Posts, Primary Document Comments, and Scholarly Journal Summaries that you'll complete throughout the duration of the course.  You'll post these assignments to our class blog.  The rubrics and PDFs of/links to the primary documents are posted in Schoology in the "HWC Primary Documents" folder.  Further, I've shared the Spreadsheet, "HWC PDP, PDC, & SJS Analysis - Spring 2017" with you via GoogleDrive.

Task:  Good morning!  Today, we'll begin our exploration of sociology with research on some of the pioneers in the field.  We'll be meeting at the library and you'll have the entire class to research your individual (see assignments at the bottom of this post). As you investigate your sociologist, focus on:
  1. Relevant biographical information (ex. When & where did he/she live?  What were the political/social/economic conditions that contributed to his/her perspective?)
  2. Contributions to the field (ex. Essential concepts and ideas that shaped sociology)
If you work efficiently, you should be able to finish your research AND audio posts to our VoiceThread by the end of class on Thursday.  You should use AT LEAST 2 different sources to gather information - you must share your citations with my "Pioneers of Sociology - Spring 16" dropbox in Noodletools.

If you finish early, please read "What is Sociology?" in preparation for Friday's discussion or work on your unit 1 vocabulary.

Objectives: Identify the characteristics of critical thinking and collaboration.  Collaborate to create a presentation on essential social science concepts.

Then, you'll pair up for your first project, "Pioneers of Sociology" and how to use VoiceThread. Each partnership will add AUDIO posts to our collaborative VoiceThread.  You should provide the following information for your sociologist: 
  1. Relevant biographical information (ex. When & where did he/she live?  What were the political/social/economic conditions that contributed to his/her perspective?)
  2. Contributions to the field (ex. Essential concepts and ideas that shaped sociology)

HWC Day 1 - Welcome!

In Honors World Cultures we'll explore the history, geography, & contemporary issues that shape our world.  I encourage you to seek connections between our studies and current news stories and your other courses.  To succeed in HWC, it is essential to establish effective, consistent work and study habits.  If, at any point, you find yourself confused or overwhelmed please don't hesitate to speak with me.

Objectives:  Introduce class procedures and expectations.  Assess knowledge of current global issues.

Task:  Good morning!  Welcome to this reading and writing intensive course!  After all the time and effort you've put in so far, its exciting to finally begin our journey together.  We'll spend the first few minutes of class reviewing class procedures and sign-out your textbooks, Globalization & Diversity and Civilization Primer.   Then, I'll assign the first step in your first group project.

Finally, we'll spend the last 30 minutes of class taking the current events quiz.  When you've finished the quiz, please begin reading and taking notes on your section of the Primer and/or read the GGS reviews (available via Schoology).

Before you leave class, be sure to turn in your rubrics and reading notes on the Great Decisions readings.

Please finish your Primer reading notes for tomorrow and the GGS reviews for Wednesday.

CPWC Day 77 - SE Asia, Australia, & Oceania Wrap-Up

Purpose:  Discuss the geography, history, & culture of SE Asia, Australia, & Oceania.

Task: Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please clear your desks of everything except a pencil in preparation for the reading quiz.  After you've finished the quiz, please complete "Commonwealth" and "Island Ties" (in Schoology).  If you've finished both of these sheets, please begin working on your Latin America map or your unit 8 reading notes.  Finally, we'll spend the last portion of class summarizing essential characteristics of the region.

Purpose:   Examine the unique culture, geography, and history of Oceania and Australia.

Task: Good morning!  When you arrive to class please clear your desk of everything except a pencil in preparation for the map quiz.  After you've finished the quiz, please turn it in at the back of the room and read the documents on Maori & Aboriginal cultures (linked below).  Then, use headphones or earbuds to watch "Kiribati: The Islands Being Destroyed By Climate Change."  If you finish with the work above before everyone has finished with the map quiz, please begin working on your Latin America map.  Finally, we'll spend the last portion of class completing summary notes on the region.

CPWC Day 76 - Australia

Purpose:  Investigate the geography, history, & culture of Australia.

Task: Welcome back!  I hope you had a relaxing, enjoyable holiday break.  When you arrive to class, please download "Australia" from Schoology and go to the last page of the packet.  We'll spend the first portion of class breaking down "Waltzing Matilda" to develop an understanding of Australia.  Then, you'll complete the remainder of the Australia worksheets before we delve into the Stolen Generations.  If time allows, you'll explore some of the contemporary issues in the region.  Finally, we'll end class with a Kahoot! to review for tomorrow's map quiz.

Task: Welcome back!  I hope you had a joy-filled, relaxing holiday break.  Today, we'll focus on defining Oceania and Australia.  However, before delving into our studies, we'll play a Kahoot! to review capitals and geographic features of Asia.  Then, you'll use the resources below to compare the Aborigines of Australia and the Maoris of New Zealand.  Next, you'll complete a directed research activity to explore Oceania.
