Media Day 3 - Illusion & Media

The Illusion of Choice: Ninety Percent of American Media Controlled by Six Corporations

Objective:  Establish a basis for studying media.  Consider the role of constructed reality in media messages.

Task:  Good morning!  Today, we'll consider how easily our brains can be fooled and the ways this information may be used by media manufacturers.  Specifically, you'll watch the TED Talk by Beau Lotto.  After you watch the video, you'll create an entry in your Media Studies Journal entitled “2/1 - Optical Illusions Show How We See.”  Answer the following question:
  • How can we apply Mr. Lotto’s ideas when considering media?  Specifically, think about the ways in which light, color, sound, image, text, etc. can be used to deliver a message.
REMEMBER - All journal entries must be hand-written.

After you've finished your journal entry, please read the "What is Media?" article in Unit 1 in Schoology.

Homework:
  • TODAY - Parent Information (GoogleForm in Schoology) & email to Mrs. Friday due by 11:59 pm
  • Tuesday, February 2 - "What is Media?" discussion (Bring highlighted, annotated reading to class.)
  • Friday, February 5 - Newspapers/magazines due in class for extra credit (2 points for each school appropriate source - up to 10 bonus points/student)
