CPWC Day 62 - BEIC, Gandhi, & Independence

Objective:   Identify trends in the historical development of South Asia.  Evaluate the historical and political significance of the British East India Company, Gandhi, & partition.  Examine the unique culture of South Asia.

Task:  Namaste!  When you arrive to class please get out your South Asia timeline.  We'll begin class with an examination of the British East India Company.  Then, you'll consider select images of Mohandas Gandhi.  Finally, we'll review your work on the partition of India.

Homework:
  • TODAY - "The Partition of India" due in class

  1. What were the main interests of the East India Company in the 18th and 19th centuries?
  2. Humanitarian motives are based on kindness and concern for others. What humanitarian motives came to influence the British government in its attitude to India?
  3. Give examples of ways in which contact with Indian society influenced the British.
  4. Why did the British become increasingly arrogant towards Indians?
