HWC Day 61 - For Further Exploration...

REMINDER:  NHS food drive for the New Jerusalem Food Bank runs until December 20. Please consider donating to this worthy cause.

Objective:  Explore current events and identify articles relevant to course content.  Watch Gojira (Japan - 1954) to examine Japanese culture and post-World War II ideology.  Find, watch, and share Ted talks that relate to class activities.

Task:  Today you'll have the option of completing one of three activities to further explore select topics.  At the end of class, everyone will post comments or posts to our class blog (http://svhs-hwc-fall2013.blogspot.com/).

Option #1 - Current Events: Use your school e-mail address to create a FlipBoard account.  Personalize your FlipBoard with sources relevant to class activities and your interests.   Then, create a "magazine" with at least 8 articles relevant to our Honors World Cultures.  Finally, provide a summary and share the link to your magazine as a new post on the class blog.

Option #2 - Ted Talk:  Use the Ted app on your tablet to find and watch at least 3 TedTalks that relate to our studies.  As you watch the videos, consider and take notes on how these ideas relate to Honors World Cultures.  After you've watched all three videos, create a new post on the class blog with links to the videos and summaries.

Option #3 - Gojira:  Watch select clips from and answer questions on Gojira (Japan -1954).  As you watch, consider how the film demonstrates traditional Japanese culture and the status of post-war Japan.  Go the class blog and post your reflection as a comment to the Gojira Reflection post.
Option #4 - Create your own assignment:  Must be approved by Mrs. Friday.

Objective:  Assess the causes and consequences of Japan's expansion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Task:  When you arrive to class, please get out your reading homework.   Work with the your group to identify similarities and differences in your analysis of the text.  After a brief discussion, I'll distribute the primary documents for analysis.  You'll work with a partner to analyze the assigned documents.  Finally, after analyzing the documents you'll construct an essay comparing and contrasting the responses of Japan and China to the West.

Objective:  Assess the causes and consequences of Japan's expansion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Task:  Today, we'll spend the first part of class taking notes on the history of Japan.  Please get out some paper and a pen or a pencil.  After taking notes, we'll spend some time analyzing the "Rescript on Education."   Next, you'll get out "Japan & China Respond to the West" and re-examine the text for content and meaning.  Finally, you'll go on the Moodle to watch a "movie" providing more details on China and Japan.

What do you know about China?  Try to defeat the dragon at The China Game.

Objective:  Examine the impact and implementation of communism in China.

Task:  As you come into class, please get out your reading notes.  You'll have a few minutes to study and/or ask questions before taking the quiz.  After you've completed the quiz, please turn it in at the back of the room and begin reading "China & Japan Respond to the West."  When everyone has completed the quiz, I'll explain the "China & Japan" activity.  Finally, we'll use the remainder of class to work on the case study on communism in China (on the Moodle).

CPWC Day 49 - History of China (Part III)

What do you know about China?  Try to defeat the dragon at The China Game.

Objective:  Examine indigenous and diffused religions and philosophies of East Asia.

Task:  As you come into class, please turn in your Mao reading. Pick up the Venn diagram and use your notes to complete the diagram.  After a brief discussion, you'll get out the computers and we'll finish the China history notes.  You'll work in small groups to create 5 multiple choice questions, 5 fill-in the blank questions, and 2 short answer questions via a GoogleDoc.  Finally, we'll begin the case study on communism in China (on the Moodle).

Objective:  Examine indigenous and diffused religions and philosophies of East Asia.  Discuss contemporary China in relation to the US and the global community.  Explore the Silk Road and its impact on the culture of China.

Task:  Welcome to quarter 2!  We'll start our exploration of East Asia by testing your knowledge of contemporary China.  Then, we'll spend a few minutes taking notes on the religions and philosophies that have shaped East Asia.  Finally, you'll spend the remainder of class completing a web quest on the Silk Road.
