HWC Day 5 - GGS, Human Origins & Historical Periodization

Objective:  Assess knowledge and understanding of Diamond's arguments in GGS.  Discuss the origins of humanity as presented in "Becoming Human."   Explore the difficulties and justifications for periodization in history.

Task:  When you arrive to class, please get out your index card in preparation for your quiz on Guns, Germs, & Steel.  After you finish the quiz, please work on "Considering Periodization" (in unit 1 of Schoology).   

After everyone has finished the quiz, I'll explain the Primary Document Posts, Primary Document Comments, and Scholarly Journal Summaries that you'll complete throughout the duration of the course.  You'll post these assignments to our class blog.  The rubrics and PDFs of/links to the primary documents are posted in Schoology in the "HWC Primary Documents" folder.  Further, I've shared the Spreadsheet, "HWC Primary Document & Scholarly Journal Analysis - Spring '16" with you via GoogleDrive.

Then, we'll continue class with a brief discussion of the "Becoming Human" documentary.  Specifically, we'll examine the argument and consider the complexities of the social sciences.

Soc Day 5 - Who Are You? (cont.)

Objective:  Investigate the manner in which society impacts the individual.  Establish a basis for studying sociology.

Task:  Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please open up "Who Am I?"  We'll spend the first portion of class discussing how society impacts the individual.  Then, we'll begin our notes on sociology.  Finally, you'll spend the last portion of class working on your VoiceThread posts.

Media Day 4 - Are You Media Literate?

Objective:  Establish a basis for studying media.  Consider the role of constructed reality in media messages.

Task:  Good morning!  We'll begin class with a brief review of the "What is Media?" reading.  Then, we'll use Socrative to play a game to test your media literacy.  In your Socrative app, please go to my classroom at: 743692  Finally, we'll use the remainder of class to begin our notes on the media.

Homework:

• TODAY - "What is Media?" discussion (Bring highlighted, annotated reading to class.)
• Friday, February 5 - Newspapers/magazines due in class for extra credit (2 points for each school appropriate source - up to 10 bonus points/student)

Objective:  Identify and label oceans, continents, and cultural regions on a world map.  Discuss the characteristics of culture.

Task: Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please use the Socrative app to log into my classroom: 743692.  We'll spend the first portion of class reviewing your reading homework.   Then, we'll begin your notes on culture.  Finally, we'll end class in partners using "Material World" posters to apply your understanding of culture.
