West Civ Day 73 - Building Up to World War I

Objective: Consider the political changes that emerged in Europe during the second half of the 19th century.

Task:  Guten tag!  Ciao!  Today, we'll continue our consideration of the political status of Europe in the second half of the 19th century.  Then, I'll introduce our Great Powers simulation.

WestCiv Day 15 - Unit 2 Test

Objective:  Assess knowledge and understanding of the Renaissance and Reformation.

Task:  Today, we'll devote the entire class to the unit 2 test.  First, I'll return and explain grades for the unit 1 test.  Then, you'll have the remainder of class to complete the unit 2 test.  If you finish early, you can begin working on the unit 3 PDPs.

WestCiv Day 14 - Renaissance Review

Objectives:  Analyze the impact of the ideas, people, and events of the Renaissance on the modern world.

Task:  Today we'll focus on tying together all the disparate ends of our investigations and discussions on the Renaissance.  Specifically, we'll identify eight pivotal events of this time periods, examine the cultural, political, and economic impacts of the Protestant Reformation, and  compare and contrast the Italian Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation.  Finally, we'll use the time remaining to review the unit 2 study guide.

WestCiv Day 13 - Protestant Reformation

Objectives:  Describe the political, economic, and cultural characteristics of the select Italian city-states during the early modern period.  Examine the ideas and course of the Protestant Reformation.

Task:  We'll start class working in groups to discuss and summarize the impact of the Italian city-states on the culture of the Renaissance.  Then, we'll continue filling in and discussing our people chart and chart on the Protestant Reformation.  Finally, for the remainder of class you'll use the Reformation hand-outs, your notes, and the textbook to answer the following questions:

1.              How did the rise of Humanism contribute to the rise of the Reformation?

2.              Why did Henry VII try to purge England of monastic communities?

3.              Why did Protestantism and capitalism complement each other?

4.              How did the Society of Jesus combat the influence of Protestantism?

5.              What role did the printing press play in the Protestant Reformation?

Objectives:  Describe the political, economic, and cultural characteristics of the select Italian city-states during the early modern period.  Examine the ideas and course of the Protestant Reformation.

Task:  We'll start class with a brief discussion on the Italian Renaissance, you'll post a reflection to our class blog.  Then, we'll continue filling in and discussing our people chart.  Finally, we'll spend the remainder of class examining the Northern Renaissance (a.k.a. Protestant Reformation).

Objectives:  Describe the political, economic, and cultural characteristics of the select Italian city-states during the early modern period.

Task:  Today, you'll present and watch the audio visual biographies of the Italian city-states.  As we watch the presentations, we'll take notes on the first page of our notes packet.  After a brief discussion, you'll post a reflection to our class blog.  Finally, we'll use any time that remains to continue with our people chart.

Objectives:  Identify the contributions of select individuals of the Renaissance and Reformation.  Collaborate to create an audio-visual presentation on an Italian city-state.

Task:  We'll begin class with a discussion on the individuals of the Renaissance and Reformation.  Then, for the second half of class, we'll be in the library finalizing city-state biographies.

Objective:  Explain how the role of the artist in society changed as the ideas of the Renaissance gained prominence.

Task:  The artistic achievements of the Italian Renaissance are arguably the most well-known aspects of the period.  Today, we'll watch a video and discuss (see below) the impact of the art on Renaissance society.  After the video, you'll have the remainder of class to work with your group on the Italian city-state biographies.

WestCiv Day 9 - Entering the Early Modern World

Objective:  Investigate the people and culture of the Renaissance.

Task:  Today, we'll begin our examination of the early modern period by researching significant individuals of the Renaissance.  After meeting in the library, I'll explain the Italian city-state biography project (see below) and the "Humanism, Renaissance, & Reformation" packet.  Then, as a class, we'll create a cart of books for the project and use the remainder of class to work on the project.

Italian City-State Biography Project Description:   Each of you will be in a group with 2 other students to research and create a presentation on an Italian city-state (Florence, Milan, Naples, Papal States, or Venice) during the Renaissance.  Your research should be compiled in a GoogleDoc and shared with all members of your group AND the teacher.  All presentations should include geographic and historical context as well as a description of the unique political, economic, social, and cultural characteristics of the city-state.  For the presentation, you may use a medium of your choice but it must include both audio and visual components.  Grading will be based on the provided rubric.
