WestCiv Day 8 - Origins Test

Objectives:  Assess knowledge and understanding of early European history and culture.

Task:  To start class, you'll sign out Aspects, Vol. 2 and we'll have the document draft for the next two units.  You'll use the remainder of class to complete the unit 1 test.  You may use your notebook for the test but must finish the test by the end of class.

 Homework:

• Monday, February 4 - Part III of Unit 1 Test due at beginning of class

WestCiv Day 7 - Middle Ages

Objectives: Define the social, cultural, and political status of the Middle Ages.  Review the ancient and medieval world in preparation for the unit 1 test. 

Task:  Today, we'll wrap up our examination of pre-modern Europe.  To begin, we'll finish the notes and crossword on the Middle Ages.  Then, we'll spend some time reviewing the primary documents for unit 1.  Finally, we'll use the remainder of class to review for tomorrow's test.

WestCiv Day 6 - Roman Empire & Middle Ages

Objectives:  Identify the Greco-Roman origins of Western civilization.

Task:  Today, we'll finish our examination of ancient Rome by finishing the review of the Roman Republic and watching a video and taking notes on the Roman Empire.  Then, we'll begin our examination of the Middle Ages with a crossword puzzle.

WestCiv Day 4 - Ancient Greece, the Roman Republic, & Themes of History

Objectives:  Identify the Greco-Roman origins of Western civilization.

Task:  As you enter class, please pick up "Excerpts of Bush's Speech" on the computer cart.  Read through this document and then create a Venn diagram comparing Bush's speech to the "Funeral Oration of Pericles."  After we've finished our comparison, we'll wrap up the notes on Ancient Greece and play a game identifying the different types of history that we'll be studying in Western Civ.   Finally, if time allows, we'll begin our examination of the Roman Republic with a video and note sheet.

WestCiv Day 3 - Themes of History & the Roman World

Objectives:  Identify the Greco-Roman origins of Western civilization.

Task:  As you arrive in class, please get out your computer to post a short reflection on Bennett's editorial, "Western Civilization Still Cradle of Learning" as a comment on the Western Civilization blog.  When everyone has finished commenting, we'll take notes on the geography and culture of Europe and Ancient  Greece.   Next, we'll work in small groups to analyze the "Funeral Oration of Pericles."  Finally, we'll compare the "Funeral Oration" to the speech by President Bush after September 11.

WestCiv Day 2 - Primary Documents & Ancient Greece

Objectives:  Explain methods and format for analyzing primary sources.  Describe the geography, culture, and Greco-Roman origins of Europe.

Task:  To begin class, we'll discuss the characteristics, significance, and process for evaluating primary sources.  Then, each person will have the opportunity to select the first two primary sources for posts and comments.

Then, we'll continue our introduction to Western civilization with a brief discussion of the editorial, "Western Civilization is Still the Cradle of Learning."  Then, we'll get out the computers, join the class blog (http://svhs-west-civ-spring13.blogspot.com/), and post a reflection about the editorial.  

Finally, we'll take notes on the geography and culture of "Europe."
