HWC Day 81 - Conquest & Colonization in Latin America

Objective:  Compare and contrast Aztec and Incan civilizations.  Describe the course and consequences of European colonization in Latin America.

Task:  Happy Friday!  As you arrive to class, please get out the completed peer review rubric and your own draft rubric.  Hand in the draft rubric and give the peer review to your partner.  We'll spend the first few minutes of class reviewing the rubric for your presentation.  Then, we'll finish our discussion about the Aztecs before beginning an exploration of the colonization.  Specifically, we'll examine two paintings, the Codex Mendoza and The Mulatto Gentlemen of Esmeraldas, to consider the cultural changes that occurred in Mexico.  Then, you'll analyze primary documents (in Google Drive) from the Aztecs and the Spanish describing Spanish conquest of Mexico.

Task:   Happy Friday! We'll start class with a sociological examination of print advertisements.  Then, we'll watch segments from a documentary about the media, Miss Representation.   Finally, if there is any time remaining, you'll work on your reflection paper.

Objective:   Locate and identify key locations on a map of Latin America.  Investigate the status of Latin America prior to and immediately after contact with Europeans.

Task: As you come into class, please get out your laptop.  If you have not done so already, please share your draft with both Mrs. Friday and your peer reviewer.  We'll spend the first portion of class completing the peer review for your essay.  Then, for the second half of class, you'll share the main ideas from your assigned article.  We'll discuss the implications of these articles and explore the status of the early American empires.

Objective:   Locate and identify key locations on a map of Latin America.  Investigate the status of Latin America prior to and immediately after contact with Europeans.

Task: Welcome back!  Now that we've had the Memorial Day break we should all be revived and ready for the home stretch!  Today, we'll focus on the geography of Latin America.  Specifically, you'll label and color the maps of Latin America. After you've finished the maps, you'll read, highlight, and answer questions on an article about the Aztec empire.

Objective:  Examine race and ethnicity in a sociological construct.

Task:  To begin, we'll listen to and discuss an interview with the CEO of Xerox, a Fortune 500 company.  Then, we'll begin our exploration of race with notes on minorities and race.   Next, we'll get out the computers and participate in activity that illustrates the complexity of race.   Finally, I'll introduce a group project on minority groups in the United States.  You'll spend the remainder of class reading and taking notes on your assigned topic.

Research Project - Reminders and Suggestions:
  1. You're paper will be divided into 3 distinct sections: geo-political & socio-historic context, survey  & of recent news coverage, and a recommendation for international action (or inaction).  However, all three of these sections should be unified by a single, central thesis.
  2. Make sure you have background sources on the history, geography, and social aspects of your issue.  Also, it will be helpful to have some sources that discuss your chosen topic in the global context.

Soc Day 23 - Exploring Gender

Objective: Consider gender as a social construct and examine gender in the US.

Task:  As you come into class, please get out your computer.  Today, you'll continue exploring gender in sociological terms.  Log onto the Moodle.  Read and take notes on the textbook excerpt, "Gender, Sex, & Sexuality."  Then, work through "Gender in America."  If you finish before the end of class, please work on your gender vocabulary and/or read "Sex Stereotyping" for later in the week.

CPWC Day 66 - South Asia Wrap-Up

Objective:  Analyze the lasting impact of Partition.  Evaluate the costs and benefits of the Green Revolution.

Task:  For the last day of our South Asia unit, we'll wrap up our studies with a brief examination of the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka and the implications of the Green Revolution in India.  Then, we'll split into teams to review the chronology of South Asia.  Finally, if there is any time remaining we'll continue reviewing for tomorrow's exam.

HWC Day 64 - Contemporary South Asia

Objective: Analyze the historical foundations of contemporary issues in South Asia.

Task:  We'll begin class with a map review game.  Then, we'll spend a few minutes discussing thesis statement construction.  Next, we'll delve into contemporary issues in South Asia.  Specifically, we'll examine the status of Sri Lanka since the end of the civil war, nationalism & fundamentalism in India & Pakistan, social dynamics of caste & gender in India, and elections in Afghanistan.
