CPWC Day 6 - Themes of Geography

Objective:  Consider the themes of geography.  Practice using latitude and longitude to identify absolute location.

Task: At the beginning of class, you'll have the opportunity to ask questions about the "Geography Skills" section in preparation for the reading quiz.  Then, you'll clear your desk of everything except a pen or pencil and your reading notes.  You'll have 25 minutes to complete the reading quiz.  As you finish, please bring it to the back of the room and pick up "The Importance of Geography."  Work on this reading until everyone has finished with the quiz.  Next, we'll take notes on the themes of geography.  Finally, we'll finish class with an examination of "Why are Maps Important?"

HWC Day 5 - Collaboration & Creation

Objective:  Define history and the social sciences as they will be utilized in HWC.  Collaborate in a Web2.0 environment to create an informative presentation.

Task:  To start class, we'll discuss and review the process and purpose of critical thinking.  The remainder of the class will be utilized for the creation of your Primer podcast.  As you work, please keep the following points in mind:

1. Each group will create an audio-visual podcast explaining your assigned topic.
2. The purpose of the presentation is to help your classmates understand the main ideas of your assigned section.
3. The presentation must be at least 3 minutes and no more than 4 minutes in length.
4. Be sure that you double check the rubric for grading criteria.

Objectives:  Review reading notes to check for understanding.  Compare and contrast types of map projections.  Analyze uses of map projections.

Task:  As you come into class please pick up the K-W-L chart from the A-V cart at the front of the room.  While you're completing the K-W portions of the chart, we'll check for homework completion.
Then, we'll spend some time discussing chapter 2, section 2 reading notes.  Next, you'll investigate the development of map-making and map-projections with a historical map study and we'll review locating using latitude and longitude.  Finally, we'll end class with a short writing assignment in which you must take on the role of cartographer.

HWC Day 4 - GGS Quiz & Collaboration

Objective:  Assess knowledge and understanding of GGS.   Define history and the social sciences as they will be utilized in HWC.  Collaborate in a Web2.0 environment to create an informative presentation.

CPWC Day 4 - Using Maps to Understand the World

Objectives:  Compare and contrast types of map projections.  Analyze uses of map projections.

Task:  We'll begin class with a brief review of your chapter 1, section 1 reading notes.   Then, we'll continue our discussion on cultural regions with a K-W-L chart.  Next, you'll complete a worksheet comparing maps from different points in history.  Then we'll take a few minutes examining the Gall-Peters Projection.

HWC Day 3 - Tools of the Trade, Defining Collaboration, & GGS Discussion

Objective: Identify, explain, and begin using Web2.0 applications to be used in HWC.   Analyze and critique the arguments of GGS.

Task: As you come into class, please pick up the papers on the sideboard.  We'll spend the first few minutes of class setting up your HWC notebook.

Then, we'll start creating a "toolbox" that promotes effective collection and organization of information.  Throughout the course, you will need to use several different Web2.0 applications to complete assignments.  As global citizens in the 21st century, we need to create a "toolbox" that promotes effective and timely engagement with information and each other.   You've already begun using the district provided e-mail account and joining the class blog and the Moodle.  Today,  each of you will set up your GoogleCalendar.  You will also join Diigo (http://www.diigo.com/) and the "SVHS HWC '13-'14" Diigo group (https://groups.diigo.com/group/svhs-13_14).  Diigo is a free social-bookmarking, research, and knowledge sharing tool that allows annotation and tagging. 

As we begin our first collaborative project, we will take advantage of this opportunity to discuss the differences between collaboration, cooperation, and copying.  Further, we'll spend some time discussing the ethics of learning.

Finally, we'll spend the last portion of class discussing and reviewing Guns, Germs, & Steel in small groups and as a whole class.  These conversations will help you to identify main ideas and clarify your understanding in preparation for tomorrow's quiz.

Objective:  Introduce class procedures and expectations and assess knowledge of current global issues.

Task:  I commend you for choosing to take this reading and writing intensive course!  Although it may seem that you've been preparing for HWC for a long time, we've finally arrived at our first day of class. HWC Day 78 - Contemporary Issues in Latin America

Objective:  Explore contemporary issues in Latin America.

Task:  The first portion of class will be dedicated to the Latin America map quiz.  After you've finished the quiz, please get out your tablet and make sure that you've removed any personal information/materials. Task:  First, we'll finish our comparison of the Aztecs and Incas.  Next, you'll practice for Monday's map quiz by reviewing the capitals of Latin America.  Finally, we'll spend the last portion of class using resources from the on-line textbook to investigate the course of Mexican history since Cortez conquered the Aztecs.

HWC Day 77 - Comparing Aztecs and Incas

Objective:  Compare and contrast the civilizations of Aztecs and Incas.  Explore contemporary issues in Latin America.

Task:  We'll start class with a capitals review game in preparation for Monday's map quiz.  Then, we'll have a discussion on the Aztec and Incan empires.  Finally, you'll watch and take notes one of four videos about contemporary issues in Latin America.

For your topic, create a summary to share with your classmates.  Each summary must include an overview of the issue, a explanation of this issue as a regional and global topic.  You'll share this information with the class on Monday and Tuesday.  Finally, we'll end class with an article on global implications of the illicit drug trade.
