CPWC Day 3 - Tech Tools & Map Projections

Objective:  Identify, explain, and begin using GoogleApps that will be used in CPWC.  Explore and analyze the types and uses of map projections.

Task:  As you are writing out the daily objectives in your notebook, I'll collect your cultural regions lists and any parent information sheets.  Throughout the course, you will need to use several different Web2.0 applications to complete assignments.  You've already joined the class Moodle and today we'll begin to build your "tech toolbox" by accessing your district provided GoogleApps account.  Specifically, you'll set up your e-mail account and your GoogleReader.  I will also provide you with your username and password to access the on-line textbook at http://my.hrw.com/

For the remainder of class, you'll work on "Why Are Maps Important?  Understanding & Reading Maps."  To complete this activity, you'll need to use the links on the Moodle.

Homework:
  • Due tomorrow (if not finished in class) - Why are maps important?
  • Thursday, 9/6 - Reading quiz on chapter 1 (pp.2-13 ONLY) of Geography

HWC Day 3 - Building a Framework

Objectives:  Identify, explain, and begin using Web2.0 applications that will be used in HWC.  Define history and the social sciences as they will be used in HWC.

Task:  We're going to give our technology another try this morning and begin building our Web2.0 "toolbox."   Today, each of you will join Diigo (http://www.diigo.com/) and the "SVHS HWC Fall 12" Diigo group.   As a class, we'll tag and annotate our first source in the "SVHS HWC Fall 2012" Diigo group.  Each of you will also set up a GoogleCalendar and a personalized GoogleReader to follow current events and this blog.  I'll also show you how to use GoogleDocs and SlideRocket.

Finally, I'll be introducing your first collaborative project.  Although GGS provides a common foundation for our understanding of history and culture, we need to establish a vocabulary from history and the social sciences to study world cultures.  To do this, you'll participate in a jigsaw activity. To complete this project, you'll read and take notes on a chapter from A Civilization Primer and work with your group to create a unique, engaging presentation that explains the main ideas and vocabulary.

Homework:
  • Study for GGS quiz
  • Begin reading assigned section of A Civilization Primer  (Reading notes, script, and storyboard (via GoogleDocs) due on Tuesday)
  • Reading quiz on Chapter 1 of Globalization and Diversity on Friday, September 7

Task:   To start class, you'll make your first entry in your "Objectives Journal" and we'll wrap up our artifact activity from yesterday.   Next we'll assess your existing knowledge of world geography with a map pre-assessment.  Finally, we'll label and color cultural regions on a world map.

Homework:

  • Due Tomorrow - Student information sheet
  • Due Tomorrow - Parent information sheet

  • Due Tomorrow - Use textbook to list THREE countries for EACH cultural region (will be collected tomorrow)

HWC Day 2 - Tools of the Trade

Objectives:  Identify, explain, and begin using Web2.0 applications that will be used in HWC.  Analyze and critique the arguments presented in GGS.

Task: Throughout the course, you will need to use several different Web2.0 applications to complete assignments.  As global citizens in the 21st century, we need to create a "toolbox" that promotes effective and timely engagement with information and each other.   You've already begun using the district provided e-mail account and joined the class blog and the Moodle.  Today, each of you will join Diigo (http://www.diigo.com/) and the "SVHS HWC Fall 12" Diigo group.  Diigo is a free social-bookmarking, research, and knowledge sharing tool that allows annotation and tagging.  Each of you will also set up a GoogleCalendar and a personalized GoogleReader to follow current events and this blog.

The second half of this class will be devoted to discussing and reviewing Guns, Germs, and Steel both in small groups and as a whole class.  These conversations should help you to identify main ideas and to clarify the more difficult points of the text in preparation for Thursday's quiz.

Homework:
  • Parent Information Sheet
  • Add one RELEVANT source to "HWC" Diigo group - source must include annotation and appropriate tags
  • Study for GGS Quiz (Thursday)
