Media Day 59 - Introduction to Social Class in the Media

Objective:  Debrief field trip.  Establish a basis for studying portrayals and construction of social class in the media.

Task:  Happy Friday!  I hope you enjoyed and learned something from yesterday's field trip.  We'll spend the first few minutes of class debriefing our experience.  Then, we'll begin our exploration of social class in the media with a short overview of the topic from the "Critical Media Project."

Preparing for participation in and observation of fishbowl discussions:

• In a fishbowl discussion, half of the class will observe while the other half of the class engages in an intellectual discussion of the topic.  This is NOT a debate!  The purpose of this activity is to encage in and observe RATIONAL, CIVIL DISCOURSE.
• If you are OBSERVING the discussion, read the provided summary and, if necessary, do a little research so you'll understand the topic.   Your task is to listen to and take notes on the discussion. At the end of the discourse, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and reflect on the topic.
• If you are PARTICIPATING in the discussion, read the provided summary AND the provided article.  You may also need to research the topic further to prepare for the discussion.  Then, complete the preparation section of your fishbowl worksheet.  As a group, you will need to sustain a respectful, intellectual discussion for 15 minutes.

Preparing for participation in and observation of fishbowl discussions:

• In a fishbowl discussion, half of the class will observe while the other half of the class engages in an intellectual discussion of the topic.  This is NOT a debate!  The purpose of this activity is to encage in and observe RATIONAL, CIVIL DISCOURSE.
• If you are OBSERVING the discussion, read the provided summary and, if necessary, do a little research so you'll understand the topic.   Your task is to listen to and take notes on the discussion. At the end of the discourse, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and reflect on the topic.
• If you are PARTICIPATING in the discussion, read the provided summary AND the provided article.  You may also need to research the topic further to prepare for the discussion.  Then, complete the preparation section of your fishbowl worksheet.  As a group, you will need to sustain a respectful, intellectual discussion for 15 minutes.  
• If you are MODERATING the discussion, read the summary and the articles.  Create discussion questions that will help to sustain the discussion.  During the discourse, you will be responsible for ensuring civil discourse.

Soc Day 49 - Defining Gender

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY:  You can earn extra credit for attending and participating the "Great Decisions" discussion series.  Please see the email I sent last week for details.  If you would like to come to any of the discussions, please let me know so that I can add you to the Schoology group.

Objective:  Define gender as a sociological concept.

Task:  Good morning!  When you arrive to class, please open up your gender notes.  We'll continue our discussion and investigation of gender.

Media Day 48 - Wonder Woman

Guiding Question:  Do magazines reflect gender stereotypes, challenge them, or construct them?

Objective:  Identify and explain gender stereotyping in the media.  Investigate the evolution of Wonder Woman in American society.

Task:  Good morning!  Pleas open up the "Wonder Woman Viewing Guide" and we'll finish "The Story of Wonder Woman."  If there is any time remaining, we'll discuss Wonder Woman in terms of our studies.

Due Dates:
